Brake pad wear

Just picked up my FL2 from dealers after getting warranty repairs done. They state that my brake pads have 4mm left on them. My car is getting serviced on 9th april, will they last that long?

Very Happy Very Happy

I thought you said you had a Freelander 2 not a Land Cruiser?

Generally 2mm is the minimum but it varies on softness/hardness and usage, I would say you would be OK and you would know by the grating noise when there's nowt left.

Depends upon how heavy footed you are, my last pads last over 80000 miles so that about 10000 miles per mm on that basis. I was only wrong once and thats when I thought I was but wasnt.

Slightly off topic, when mine was serviced in December the dealer said I have about 4mm left as well but I would know when they needed changing as there is a warning light on the dashboard - is that right ??

Much better i think to have a visual inspection from time to time. It's easy to do. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

yes or maybe!

I was told exactly the same as Radar-UK by my servicing garage, I also wondered if the warning light was correct and if it is actually reliable?

I've now done 47,000 miles on original brake pads, and no warning lights yet. Should I just wait for the light to show up, or get it checked again between services? Life is not a dress rehearsal!

As mentioned on here before, depends on how hard you use the brakes. Normally an auto gearbox wears the friction linings quicker due to little engine braking.

I would not rely on the brake pad wear warning lamp alone. Would you wait for the oil light to come on before topping up with oil? I hope not. It's easy to inspect the thickness of the linings yourself and you can also get them inspected free of charge at many outlets. But be aware of over jealous garages!! it's free cos they want your money somehow!!

Once they are down to a couple of mm, it's time for new pads before you get metal on metal. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Indeed superspark, no warning lights. The pads on right left (back) wore out and started to make a faint scratching noise. That's how I knew that my pads was due for a replacement.

I have commented before that it was my REAR pads that needed replacing at 18k, and not FRONT as I would have thought... Upgraded to an ex demo, 7 mth old, Rimini Red/Ebony Napoli Auto HSE on 28th Jan 2011, added roof rails, mudflaps and side strips.
