Got a second set of wheels and I want them painted or coated black!

Is painting or powder coating the best way to go?

Lastly, gloss black, satin black or Matt black - Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated!

Powder coating it a stronger coating which will resist paint chipping better IIRC

Matt black will mark really badly I would have thought

It would look rather cool mind you, transform the wheels, even the old HSE ones!

If you powder coat it must be done very , very well.

the slightest area of poor adhesion will let moisture in and then the coating will peel off. It is harder and very durable but preparation is everything.

I have old cars with wire wheels and I would suggest a good two pack finish may be preferable

I've had several sets of wheels for my racing motorcycle re-finished. Changing tires out every race weekend takes a toll on them. Painted wheels finish doesn't last long, so I switched to powder coating. It's quite durable as long as it's done well.

Some important points:

Preparation is paramount. I've found that having them media blasted with walnut shells prior to painting is effective.

You will want to use someone who specializes in wheels. Improperly prepped lips (where the tire physically makes contact with the rim) will result in a slow constant air leak.

Scheduled washing/waxing of the rims will increase the duration that they look good.

When re-mounting the tires, make sure the tire shop uses protection on the mounting machine. If not done, they will scratch the rims, which may result in future oxidation and/or chipping.

We regularly have wheels colour-coded for customers and demonstrators. 100% with painting and 100% with avoiding matt/satin.

Painting is cheaper, easier to repair and will not bubble like powdercoat will if poorly applied (you will only find this out after a long period of time).

Matt paint does absorb marks and chemicals from the road and cleaning products, therfore a laquered finish is more durable.

I like black chrome wheels... hides the brake dust also

Funny you should say that.......... I should be able to post a picture of NPinks next car (not that he is aware.......yet ) later today or tomorrow which has had the grilles, badges, vents, wheels and door handles painted in black chrome. It is a D4 but will give you a good idea of the effect.
