Are extended warranties worth it?

My FL2 has just over 2 years left of it's new vehicle warranty. When the warranty runs out however, I will still have 12 months left of my finance package before I can either buy another new car or give them mine back etc.

So when the time comes, is it worth coughing up the extra for another 12 months of warranty?

Does anyone know roughly how much it would be and what is covered cos I checked the LR website and could not see much.

Over 600 quid for the LR one including Assistance.

View it like this, it's an insurance policy, which LR or anyone else opperate at a profit, therefore the chances are if you dont take it out, but put that money aside, in general terms, you should be in pocket.

You could estimate your risk. If the cars not been giving any problems, why should it after 3 years? If it's a S or GS, it's less likely to need looking at and more simplistic, why pay so the ones who have HSE's etc.

SWMBO's car will be 3 years old in 2 weeks and I've absolutely no intention of forking out for a warranty. If I get caught out, thats the risk I take, but personally I've had one warranty issue, nothing drastic, so why pay for nothing? God bless Visa if I have to.

Is it the same as the approved used warranty???

I think it is worth about £500 but I guess it varies on mileage and also if you get Landrover Assist with it also.

I'm in two mind whether it is worth it or not... I'm a little supprised with my used warranty how much hastle it has been (and i understand another company administers it) but given it has a LR badge on the front I would have thought it a little more seamless but then I might be being a bit naive. That said, I like the fact that ultimatly it is a Land Rover product so if does cuase problems then you will have the backing of LR should you want to take it further.

Personnally my view is, if a car has been fairly fault free then with some empathetic ownership it will continue to do so for a good few years past the warranty period by which time I would suggest a new car anyway. If it has cuased you problems from day one then I would be inclined to get the warranty or swap the car... And this advise is not LR specific but for all things...! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

personaly i think there a complete rip off. At prices from £500 to £900 a year. If for instance you dont need to call them out you have saved a packet.
As in all things being equal you take a chance. If you were to save that amount of money each year it will build up so in the event of problems you have the money ready or you can spend it on something else nice instead.
what i do think is a good idea though. Brake down cover with recovery, Its about £60 RAC or £70 AA. This gives you peace of mind that if you should brake down many miles from home And they cant fix it at the roadside you know you and your car can be taken home free of charge and sort out the car from there.
I once broke down many years ago several hundreds of miles from home. Didnt cost me a penny to get me and the car home. Ultamately its up to you. Thumbs Up

My personal 2p;

I bought LR's own extended warranty for my HSE for the 4th year. Cost me £515 from memory (not inc LR assist/recovery) and am a family member of the AA so have that with them for several vehicles. Went with them as Warranty Direct etc were talking about £700 for main dealer cover.. Shocked

I have had D3's with electronic/suspension issues, the FL2 I have has/had Parking sensor issues, so if they need swapping again I will get most of my money back easily & I didn't want to have to worry about sorting stuff like this. So it seemed like a no brainer for me.

In the end it's up to you & where your priorities lie, I love my FL2 but know what LR electronics can be like, and there are quite a lot of systems on an HSE to act up Whistle

Yes, a different matter if you have a high spec vehicle and it's given you problems. That said, it's a 5 min job to do the parking sensors. On the LR Topix site, it says remove the leads one by one to establishg which one is playing up and clip it out, a quick wriggle, top to bottom movement, then replace. You can get LR ones off Ebay for 20 quid, job done.

Most a aftermarket "warranty" policies are "mechanical breakdown insurance"
E.G. A noisy wheel bearing may not be covered as it has not actually failed. Many only cover the failed item and claiming for consequential damage is sometimes difficult as is diagnostic time.
Read policy carefully first it might not work out as cheap as you think.
Manufacturers own extended warranty is what it says ,hence the high price. All FL2's (3) Gone

Yes, a complete rip off! As I keep saying, these are products sold to make profit, not a charitable institution.

On FFRR I have had a new webasto FBH, 2 Injectors, engine and climate software updates. It comes to at least £2k worth, I decided the £1055 including Land Rover Assist for another years warranty may be worth it.

If the SD4 turns out to be very reliable, I might take a different view for the fourth year. Advice from the local dealer is the Freelander is very reliable and provide no common issues. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury Corris Grey

Current cost is £430 (£3000 max per claim) or £550 with no max, the latter for vehicles under 5 years old only. LR Assist is £110 on top of that. Given the cost of major LR items, I think I'll go for one (the cheaper option) this time around. Even if the Freely2 IS more reliable, I've had too many Land Rover breakdowns in the past to want to take the risk...
