United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Sumatra Black

I don't think many of use will wear out our tyres on the steel spare so maybe some were supplied with a full size tyre and some not!

NB: maybe they stopped fitting them after 2007MY FL2 07 TD4 GS Auto

I can't understand how its decided what car will have a full size tyre with alloy, a skinny tyre on steel or a compressor and a can of junk.
Mine came with a proper tyre on a spare alloy and I'm not complaining but for the cost at manufacturing stage it would only be a few £'s for every car to have this.
Penny pinching at its meanest.

They all have the same rolling circumference.

Back in the 60's Rootes decided not to paint the brake drums on some of their cars during manufacture and it worked out at a saving of 0.1p per car, thats how pennypinching penny pinching manufacturers are!!! I was only wrong once and thats when I thought I was but wasnt.

Correct me if I am wrong but haven't LR stopped supplying a spare of any kind now, its a can of jollop unless you spend another £180 when ordering a new Freely.

The can of jallop is ok providing the tyre is in a fit state to take it, I can imagine many a Land Rover owner being stuck on the side of the road waiting for someone to bring a proper wheel to get them mobile again, I only hope the folk that thought of this crazy idea keeps getting punctures themselves when the family is in the car and its minus 10 outside and the jallop has frozen up and the tyre is in bits!! I was only wrong once and thats when I thought I was but wasnt.

Mines a 225/65 17 steel too (with a Hankook tyre). Tyre goop is ok for emergencies, but often stops the tyre being repaired afterwards and can throw the balancing off due to some goop settling in a blob. This then means buying a new tyre at £150ish for Wranglers.
My brother removes his spare wheel and takes a can of goop with him when going camping/tin-tenting to give more space for stuff.

I'd rather have a spare wheel, even if it is a space-saver. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

My 07 model had a 235/65/17 Goodyear Wrangler on a metal wheel while the main wheels were 235/65/17 Continentals on alloys.

This time I forked out for a full sized alloy spare which matches the four main wheels and tyres.

But it is not really a space saver, the overall circumferance is the same be it a 17" or a 19" so we are only talking tyre width and only in some cases. As said before its penny pinching. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

My 07 GS had 235/65/17 Goodyear Wranglers on all 4 road wheels and it's steel spare. Steel spare swapped for matching alloy.

Models up to 2010 had steel spare with 225/65x17 tyre, one width narrower than road wheels. Many have fitted an original tyre to steel spare when replacing tyres, picking the best old one.
I have paid the £180 on my SD to have full size alloy spare.
Gunk kit is of little use if tyre damaged. You do not even get a jack or wheelbrace.

Recently we took out 2 offside tyres on our Volvo with a major hole on an A road. Fortunately Volvo had a space saver for wrecked tyre and other did not deflate though it had a large bulge.
There were 8-10 cars stopped further along road some with 1 flat others with 2, about half had no spare wheel and gunk was of no use at all.

"it will never happen to me" it b------- well did. All FL2's (3) Gone

No spare wheel = more mpg & less emissions. Not much, sure, but you can bet for the EU tests the car was 'standard' ie no spare wheel. Trevor

Reminds me of when all commercials including small vans had to be weighed and were taxed accordingly.

I feel cheated Big Cry .
I may get my narrow tyre off the rim and popped on ebay and put the cash towards the funds for two new tyres. I'll then put a worn tyre on the spare steel rim

I'd prefer a full size one to rely on and a few quid in the back pocket.
Thumbs Up

I've got a full size 18" alloy spare and a tin of liquid rubber. Would I use the liquid, no, never, but the inflator is handy to lilo inflations.
