Dashboard exterior temp display.

I have noticed that the temperature display on the dash sometimes shows "EXT" next to the temperatuere and sometimes a snow flake. I have looked in the manual, but there is no mention of this.

Does anyone know what exterior conditions dictate what is shown?

Thanks

I thought that, but its been at 4^C and its shown both (on different occasions).

I had thought that it might show the snowflake if its been colder than 4 and then warmed up, and the "EXT" if its been warmer and then cooled down.

Not noticed the "boing".

I noticed the boing the other day and the snow flake seemed to flash a couple of times.

Funny as I was just going to ask the question and found this new thread.

Draw your attention to the snowflake. That said, my other LR makes a boing and I cant see what it's for at all. Nothing shows on the dash and it suits itself when it does it.

No cold weather Boing's on MY10's apparently. I mentioned it when I took mine in for something else, service rep' said "yes it should have one", service manager said "no it shouldn't" and that his 09 model didn't either. More cost cutting me thinks!

My 07 SE shows the snowflake at around 4°C (and boings!) but not always as the temp indication changes. My guess is that there is a separate sensor input (or processor function) for the snowflake warning. But hey, I'm usually wrong(ish).

ext temp

My wife took the Freelander for a trip to Coventry on Sunday. She was surprised by the loud(ish) beep, and checked around the instruments for a problem. After finding nothing, she continued cruising up the M1 ok.
I thought I knew what it was when she mentioned it, as it had happened to me. Out in it today, the temperature started to drop, and when it beeped, she spotted the flashing snowflake!

I always thought there should be a ping, but the dealer assures me there isn't. I think its penny pinching on a £30000 plus car and a very poor safety feature (or lack of).

Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to whether it should ping when the temp drops as it seems some do and some don't. is it an option you have to turn on, is it something they fitted on some and not others?
I have a 2009 XSauto.
