Stop start shuts off when the temperature drops to 4°C. Turn it off myself when doing short trips and trying to get the car warmed up.

In my mind the hdc or reduced traction fault occurs when you start a cold car because the oil supply to the haldex is a little slow at building up pressure when cold, the electrics then notice this initial low pressure and give a warning.

Mine has always (often) done that during winter/cold weather startups. Freely is now 3-years old and just started her 4th winter, so therfore this is not a problem or fault, it is as previously mentioned a normal message (warning if you like) when cold starting.

Mine does this, it says there is a fault but will switch the HDC on andvit works,

Yes it does show the message BUT it shouldn't if there isn't a fault

This morning on starting the car I had the HDC fault warning, but wasn't worried has I had read the previous posts, as well as the warning there was no volume on the radio !

I dropped the wife off about 2 mile away stopped the car & re-started it, no fault warning and the volume back, I think the silence was better, it was that bloody annoying Graham Norton on the radio. What if there were no hypothetical situations?

I am bringing back this topic because I've found out which is the reason for the "HDC Not Available" warning message.
I've had the chance to play a little with the ABS controller and found out that this message is shown on the Instrument Cluster when the supply voltage is below a specific threshold.
Then all fell into place...

Let's think a little.
1.
We all know that HDC is working by selectively braking individual wheels in order to keep a certain speed.
All this is done by the help of the ABS system.
The pressure needed for the brakes to function is generated by the ABS system pump.
And guess what... The ABS motor pump is electrical.
So, below a specific battery voltage, the system is taking the decision that it isn't safe for HDC to be available, because of the pump inefficiency to create a specific system/brake pressure.
2.
At low ambient temperatures, the electrical load on the battery is considerable because of the glow plugs' activation.
Also, at low temperatures the performance of the lead batteries is much lower.
These will lead to a way to low system voltage, just before and during cranking.

The above combined will give us the "HDC Not Available" message.

But the system will work OK as soon the system voltage will reach nominal values once the engine is started and the generator will do its job.

So, it isn't the Haldex and its oil the ones responsible for this message. The ABS system is...
In fact the Haldex has nothing to do with HDC. The Haldex is almost deactivated when braking and ABS is active...

Hi i`m hoping someone might be able to advise me i had my freelander 2 into dealers for q106 and the message HDC FAULT system not available but they said they couldn`t find any fault stored it came on again at weekend so i rang dealers again and i was told it has to go in for two days on the 23/2/11 just glad its under warranty
