England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Zermatt Silver
Biodeisel

Hello Alll,

Anyone used Biodeisel in their TD4? It's available from the pump at 92p a litre which is a massive saving but no saving at all if there are problems.

Cheers freetwothink

I do not know the situation in UK, but I think that is now mandatory for diesel oil to have 7% biodiesel. It is an EU directive.

Yes that is the same in the UK - we are all running on it. Landrover, like other manufacturers, have approved it.

What you can't run your Freelander on is the stuff made out of recycled cooking oil - old indirection diesels are fine, and indeed people run them on up to 50% brand new cooking oil when that is cheaper than diesel, too. You see people with old Shoguns, Transits etc filling up outside supermarkets from litre bottles of whatever is the cheapest cooking oil. Trevor

Official Land Rover Technical Information states " the new 2011my FL2 engine can now run on 10% bio- diesel compared to 5% on previous models, the piston rings------------"

Not that I will be trying it. Our local garage is usually expensive(5p+) compared to others, so normally fill with Jet (10 miles away) or supermarket in next main town but if am nearly empty and passing BP (30 miles away) when travelling to North of Scotland I fill with Super Diesel. On 400-500 mile round trip it works out about same cost per mile but I feel if using budget fuel regularly a treat is worth it. All FL2's (3) Gone

I used to run the Disco 2 on 50% biodiesel from recycled cooking oil, and the engine ran much better on it. VW allow their engines to run on 100% bio. A lot of London taxis now run on it.
You shouldn't really have a problem running on bio so long as it's properly made, BUT

It may void your warranty if they find out.
It's possible that damage might occur to your fuel pump, but I doubt it.
Don't try to run a Freelander on cooking oil. It'll give you all sorts of problem. Fine in a TDi though!

Have a look at http://www.purefuels.co.uk/

Just before anyone puts veg in an engine...

Biodiesel DOES NOT lubricate the engine in the same way as Normal diesel. (diesel made from recycled cooking oil or straight from veg is the same as cooking oil comes from plants anyway so there's no difference) The effect would be similar to putting sand in your oil, it'lll wear piston rings, linings etc etc.

Basically it'll knacker injectors first, fuel pump etc etc because all these are lubricated by the fuel. Use normal diesel unless your manual advises, and even then, the advice is to service more often.

Red's even cheaper... Whistle

And please please no one hijack this saying by 2T oil in your fuel would solve this. Road wars last night nicked someone for having oil in their diesel, admittedly it was more than a small measure but is it worth it, trying to explain to a bobby? Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

If you mean the 5-10% stuff, you already are. All diesel in the UK has a proportion of bio diesel in now, by law. Trevor
