To avoid the handbrake sticking/freezing it is the norm here in Norway (with ALL cars) to avoid using it during winter (at least). Of course if you have to occasionally, you have to, but not for longer periods and NOT in moist freezing weather.

Had exactly the same problem with a BMW several years ago, washed it and parked in the garage while I was away in the sun for 5-week "winter" vacation. Forgot the handbrake rule and had to pay dearly for it afterwards  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

where's the quickest/ cheapest place to get rear discs, handbrake shoes and pads from - i'm nr southampton?

I got my local tyre place to do mine, wasn't cheap tho!!

They used LR parts from the dealer but their labour was a lot less.
