Handbrake stuck on?

Hi all.

Driving home this eve the steering started to vibrate causing a shudder right thru the car, when I slowed down it really sounded like the tyre was flat.

Tyres all ok but burning smell from rear offside wheel. The handbrake has been a bit sticky when first setting off in the morning but I put this down to low temps. After a while coolling set off on the last 6 miles and all was ok.

Sounds like the handbrake or maybe even the brakes may be binding.

Is there anything I can do without taking stuff apart bearing in mind it's new years eve?
I was going to crawl under tomorrow and try spraying brake cleaner round the area see if that did any good?

WD40, it does the lot from curing the clap to waterproofing waxed jackets, smell is sort of addictive too.

Ok took it in to a tyre place today.

Verdict is the shoes of the handbrake are badly corroded, which has scored the drum badly.

Fair enough I thought, they have to be replaced.

Then the guy says as the drum for the handbrake is 'part of the rear disc' the rear disc needs to be replaced too, and as a result the rear pads will have to be changed too!

Is that right?

Yes that is correct. Your rear drum handbrake is actualy part of the disc. Were cars have all four disc brakes smaller hand brake shoes are used.
as the handbrake is only used to hold the car when stopped there is no need for large shoes as the braking of the car is done by all four discs. unless you keep appyling the handbrake before the car comes to a complete stop then disc pads are changed. Normaly by the time the handbrake shoes need changing its time to replace the lot.
Excess wear caqn accour if hill decent controll is used often as the car applies disc brakes while decending and only releases them on wheel lock or exceleration.Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Well it reassures me the guy is not trying to rip me off.

Shame is only had the pads changed 8 months ago or so. Just because its a new disc going on the old pads won't be up to it.

My laptop packed in at the weekend, then on sunday night my main house comp hard drive failed. Dishwasher sprung a leak and flooded the kitchen.

Lucky white heather anyone?

It's a good start to 2011, I think we have all had days, months, years like that. It gets to the point that I just smile like a Cheshire cat.

My handbrake got stuck a few days before Christmas (2010). The LR2 (the Green one)was parked in my home garage and wouldn't move. Had to get it towed to the local dealership, who had to free up the rear brakes.

what was the end result of this problem? i have the same burning smell from the rear drivers side wheelhub and the brake disc/ hub is red hot.

my handbrake has been sticky/ wierd for a couple of weeks. how can i sort this - is the handbrake drum only on the rear drivers side disc or on both discs?

Rich

Think it's both sides.

Had to have new shoes and new discs (which as already mentioned contain the handbrake drum, plus new pads.

Mines doing the same. Feels like the handbrake is on at the start of the journey, then a burning smell then it loosens up.
Today I left the handbrake off all night and when I was parked at work and the car felt great to drive, much smoother and ever the mpg got better!

Booked in to get checked out, I know brake pads are not covered by warranty, however I would have thought the hand brake failing like this would be a design fault in a car designed to "Go Beyond"

Will see next week when it goes in but if it's gona cost, looks like I will be parking without the handbrake for good!
