United States 2009 LR2 i6 HSE Auto Alaska White
Fuel cap error message

Hello all,

For several months I periodically (now almost constantly) get the "fuel cap loose or missing" error message which eventually leads to the CEL. I've taken it by the dealer 4 or 5 times for this and other issues, such as the rear diff that was just replaced, but they continue to insist I'm not tightening the cap properly. They've replaced the cap once. They check/clear codes each time and each time the light returns within 3 days of leaving the dealer - whether I've touched the fuel cap or not!

Perhaps I'm not operating the cap properly, but considering that I have rebuilt engines and perform 98% of the maintenance on my D1 and recently started doing the maintenance on my D3 (now that it's no longer free) I feel pretty good about my automotive skills.

Has anyone else had this problem? What was the fix? I remember reading about others having sensor problems awhile back, but I can't seem to find those threads in the search.

I presume there is a pressure sensor somewhere in the tank or fill pipe that measures pressure to determine if the error should display or not. My first guess would be said sensor. There must be vent lines as well - the next thing I'd check. So I'm going to take the FL2 (I so wish LR hadn't decided to call it an LR2 in my part of the world) back to the dealer and try to walk through the maintenance problem with them (I've suggested the sensor to them once already and they shrugged it off). I shouldn't have to hold their hand, but it seems to be the only way to get this fixed. Damn annoying! So... any other helpful hints would be very appreciated! 99 D1

Tell the dealer to pressure test the EVAP system next time and point them in the direction of the vac pump, which I've read is behind the rear diff.
