Winter tyres 17 inch / 18 inch?

Hi

I have posted elsewhere saying I'm thinking of getting an 07/08 Freelander HSE, which, as I understand it, would have 18 inch alloys as standard.

I would like to purchase an additional set of 17 inch alloys, which the GS and SE models seem to ship with, and put winter tyres on them. I would then run a pair of 18 inch Summer wheels March to October and a pair of 17 inch Winter wheels November to February.

Any reason why I could not do this? Would different size wheels have any effect on the gearing, suspension or odometer, for example? Please excuse my ignorance but I'm not very knowledgeable about wheels and tyres.

Thanks

United Kingdom

The recommended size for the smaller wheels have taller side walls than the 18" so the overall size is the same.
ie 18" = 235 wide, 60 tall
17" = 235 wide 65 tall

Stick to the recommended size of tyre at the gearing and speedo will work as normal Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

If you buy 17" rims just be sure to purchase 235 x 65 x 17 tyres, it will then give you the same rolling circumference as the 18" ones.

EDIT: posted same time as Andy Smile

Her Ladyship's FL2 runs on two sets of alloys both 17" GS style - one dressed in Conti (my choice) winter [November>April] tyres and one in Goodyear (factory fitted) summer [April>November] tyres. That way if she "kerbs" an alloy we have lots of spares - in fact we have 12 GS alloys in total - all at the moment in pristine condition.
