Private Plates

Looking to buy a private number plate are there any pitfalls to be aware of? Looking at RegTransfers as they have one I like.

Only use a company that is a member of the CNDA, remember theres DVLA transfer fee to add, about 80 quid I think, there might be VAT on some plates too so better check as it goes up on Jan 4th to 20%.
Buy the best plate you can afford preferrably without a year letter/designation then you will always be able to sell it on for more than you paid for it in years to come, remember you cant make it read any different to that intended, ie make up a word or alter the spacing to do so even though some companies show them like this when selling them! and dont buy those silly irish numbers either.
You cant put a plate on a vehicle that makes it appear younger than it actually is.

Ive bought 2 numbers for my cars over the years with no problems, they are now worth around 6 grand more than I paid for them, usually takes about a couple of weeks to get all the documentation through after youve paid the monies.
Reg Transfers are a well known company so I think you should be ok with them. I was only wrong once and thats when I thought I was but wasnt.

Chavtastic when they make the name by spacing 11 too close or positioning screws etc

Good when it's a number with just initials etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

The best place to get them from is :-

www.dvla-som.co.uk

All plates include the £80 transfer fee (It's never been £100). Many other companies will offer the same plate at the same price, but add the £80 transfer fee. This is because they will also buy from the DVLA but add on the £80 on top which is their profit margin. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Have you checked the DVLA site to see if the plate you want is still available from them - it will be much cheaper.

I wouldn't of thought Reg plate companys advertise plates that are still at the DVLA, They do however sometimes advertise plates that other companys are advertising due to the fact they are owned by an individual and are marketing it on their behalf.

I've got my two initials and 4 numbers on mine. I didn't really buy it as any sort of investment but I suppose it is. Always wanted to have a personal plate.

Mine was first issued in Lancashire in 1919 so there is a bit of history behind it.

If you look into it a bit more you will find that there's all sorts of quirky bits of info about them for example CB 9423 would have been issued before 9423 CB (and this type is called a "reverse" cos it's round the wrong way). Letters before plates should be worth a bit more than letters after (sorry a bit garbled that). 3 letters and 3 Nos are usually more pricey but... if you just want to take the year off your car you could buy something like a UXU plate with Nos or XVX quite cheaply.

I've noticed that quite a few manufacturers (VW?) now show cars with private plates in their ads but they probably just make them up for the photo shoot!

Anyway it's fun looking for one. Enjoy the search.
