CLUTCH SMELL

Having had 2 previous Freelanders, 02 & 05 which over 7 years never gave any cause for concern I am a bit worried about the clutch on my new, to me, F2. Whenever put under any load the clutch smells a lot, it doesn't slip, just gives off a bad burning smell. The old F1 did this only if it was under real pressure like towing Rally Cars out a ditch but this does it on a steep drive. Have I got a problem ?. The car is nearly 3 yrs old with 33000 mls.
I have also found the engine to be quite a bit noisier (almost pinking if it was petrol) under load than the old car. is this normal.
Sorry if these are daft questions.
Thanks

Other members on here have reported a clutch smell, fortunately we've never suffered that with our 2. If it's still in warranty then I would recommend a trip to the dealer before the warranty runs out. ______________________

Trouble is, clutches seem to be a very grey area as regards warrenty claims, Classed a fair wear and tear by most manufacturers. If the worst happens anyone know what a good price is to have a new clutch fitted.

I had my clutch replace sometime ago, it wasn't smelling though was slipping.
I'm not far from you and take mine to Team Valley Land Rover, very good with warranty issues. Current 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Black 2016 Onwards

I've been getting a strong burning smell when going over difficult ground when my Freelander 2 has momentarily got "stuck" in a rut or some mud. I don't know whether it would be the clutch or something else which is slipping and/or burning. I have been presuming that this is not normal and with just 8K mileage I am expecting it to be resolved under warranty. It goes into the dealer this coming week. I have seen a few posts on here about similar problems put I have not been able to find one which also gives the diagnosis and remedy.

I don't know if this is clutch problem or somthing related to the clutch? I seem to have an intermittent problem (already been to dealer who could not find any fault) when I accelerate in 4th or 5th gear the engine revs go up 3-400 rpm and drops again before the car picks up. It sounds and feels similar to riding the clutch? There is no burning smell like the previous posts.
Sad

I have nearly 80k on my 08 plate and have had the "aspestossy" smell on many occassions, especially when under extra load.
Dragged a caddy (Not the tea type) out of the snow yesterday and there it was again - Seems to disappear after 30 seconds or so and hasn't effected my clutch performance at all.

Bug***, this must be contagious or something to do with prolonged cold weather?

Over the past week I’ve experienced what I thought was wheel spin in 2nd and 3rd gears but began to suspect in maybe clutch slip, then last night I was playing on the pub car park waiting for opening time. As I reversed up to the highest point the car stopped in the snow and all four wheels spun for a couple of seconds before I dipped the clutch and rolled back down. I just thought it was wheel spin until the horrible burning smell.

At first it smelt like burning rubber but then asbestos.

I got out and checked the tyre tracks and there was no sign of wheel spin. I tried the car on a couple of steep hills later and booting it on an empty bypass and had no problem.

I’ll see how it goes during the week. A Land Rover owner since 1988

Tee Hee!
Try IESpell Handy little app that sits in your I.E tool bar, one click and it corrects your mistakes! doesn't yet work with 64bit OS's. Just make sure you select English (British) after installing as it defaults to the U.S dictionary

Looks like its not just me. I experienced it again this afternoon.
I was going along a track through snow and for a few seconds was making no progress at all at a point where the snow was a bit deeper. I am not sure if the wheels were spinning but the revs from the engine were resulting in only very slight forwards progress and the rear was skidding slightly from side to side. Suddenly I got traction again and was away but then then the very strong acrid burning smell filled the cabin.
Possibly similar to http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic7356.html
Poor driving technique on my part or a vehicle defect?

Mine does pong a little when under stress Shocked , at least during the last fairly steep climb up to my mountain cabin and with Freely fully loaded I often get a smell that is similar to as described. But before anybody suggests it, it is not due to me giving off any nervous gases Whistle .

Freely is over three years old and has always given of this pong under these circumstances, but I have never worried about it and the clutch or whatever is making the pong is still working Thumbs Up 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Good one Wingit!

The problem with them slipping in the cold...could this be that the oil isn't up to temperature...therefore thicker and just pushing the clutch plates apart ever so slightly? Just a thought, and admittedly something I've never come across before?
