Faulty batch possibly? If all the people's cars having troubles are the same age? Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

It seems on my model, the TD4e that part of the modifications for start/stop operation was to the clutch
I wonder if the dual mass friction plate is a key player in the improvement stakes |

Don't think so, that's all a part of getting the starter motor to swing the engine to a higher rpm. |

I have a MY10 which developed a bad clutch smell when it was 4 weeks old, it's worse reversing up a steep hill. I expected this to be sorted under warranty, my dealer referred it to LR and they reckon it's either wear and tear or I'm not driving it "properly". After numerous discussions/letters they won't approve investigation or repair.

No, the DMF plate is used to remove diesel engine torque spikes and vibration, inherent because of their high compression and part of getting rid of that is the dual mass friction plate. Another site is saying that the car manufacturer is replacing this plate as well as the clutch.
So maybe Freelander 2's have an inferior DMF and with the uprated one in the TD4e, has cured it |

Friday...and to the dealer to see about the smell and to hear that a new clutch will be required...under the warranty fortunately. |

Until Nigel's last post I was going to say it was the brakes. Remember if you spin the wheels the traction control applies the brakes. I'm pretty sure the burning smell I have had once or twice was brakes, not clutch. |
