I think you'll find that "Disco Dave" resides on the D3 forum Rolling Eyes

As for this discusion, we have both FL2 & D3, but as the D3 is mine my opinion would be biased and having owned both and driven both, (on-road & off-road) I know which one is best.

Long live the D3/4/5/6/7/8/9/ Thumbs Up ______________________

I like the FL2 extra torque, when you just ease it on....., and the car will take off like a rocket without needing to drop gears Cool plant your foot and the autos drop in gear, some times to a screaming 2nd gear until it changes up a cog and you end up going nowhere fast

for AndyC since you like talking about other about makes Whistle , my dads Lexus RX440h plants itself and shoots off with the leccy motors torque and the 3.? engine shouts out nice and loud when the loud foot dictates, especially in tunnels Cool Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

If the Mini had been properly driven I doubt that it would have went down like it did!

The thing with Diesels is that they feel a lot faster than they actually are, my last one felt incredibly quick (re-mapped ST TDCi) but in reality was a lot slower than my Z4 which supposedly doesn't have a huge amount more power and certainly has less torque. I think the beauty of diesels is that you can leave them in one gear and they just go on pulling and pulling.

My mate used to have a Cooper S that he revved the nuts off and it was an utter flying machine. Blue

The mini would have stomped all over the Freelander if driven properly. As already said it is about torque. The Mini would have needed 2nd gear to accelerate quickly at 30mph and would need to be red lined to get the best from it. The Coopers take off (relatively speaking) over 4000rpm.

A lazy Freelander driver will beat a lazy Mini driver. But a good driver in both cars will leave the Freelander standing.

How can I say this so confidently - because I traded in my 05 Mini Cooper for my Freelander. I traded speed and handling for comfort.

Good point well made.

I too know this from past experience. Before I had an FL1, I owned a Ford Fiesta ST. 2.0 150bhp but only 140lb ft of torque. I suspected that not driving properly was the reason for the mini not keeping up. The FL2 would slaughter my old ST if both floored it in 3rd at 30mph. That said, the ST was even faster that the mini would be if floored in 2nd at 30mph and as a result would destroy the FL2. Very nice car that was but damn thirsty and crap in winter. I once (legally) had 130mph out of it Shocked Not bad for a fiesta.

Remember though, quicker more economical 2WD cars don't get you from A to B any easier than the FL2 can. Yet when the weather is bad like last winter, all these other cars dither about skidding here and there, whilst the triumphant Land Rover (when driven appropriately for the conditions) just sails past and we can enjoy the 'I told you so' speech Thumbs Up  LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

In the words of a certain couple of comedians, 'Calm down, calm down'. They're only cars after all, and from the same stable! Got an FL2 coz a D3 was A) too expensive and B) don't easily fit in a normal parking space. If I had the cash though, A D3 (or 4 now) it would be.... Or a Foers Ibex but they cost way too much to run.
