Fuel consumption/under inflated tyres

Been wondering why i've been getting low mpg of late, checked pressures for the first time in weeks and was a little suprised to see the osf was 24psi and the osr was 18psi Shocked, the ns f/r were spot on at 32psi. I haven't driven any different these last two days than any other but the mpg has gone from approx 33-34mpg to 38-39mpg mainly mixed A/B roads. Should I assume that if I inflate all tyres to 50psi i'll get 45mpg? Laughing

Will be keeping a few 20 pence pieces in my pocket and a closer eye on things from now on Thumbs Up

And.......while i'm at posting rather than reading thought i'd say how utterly faultless the FL2 has been even with 60,000 miles approaching at an alarming rate! great car she is Very Happy

Try inflating to 100 psi and you could break the World Record Laughing

Seriously, glad you're pleased with your FL2 even after 60k. It's a great motor!

Correct tyre pressures depend on the actual tyre fitted and the load being carried (i.e. total weight of vehicle). There will always be an optimum which is the best for fuel consumption / wear rate.

Over inflation is just as bad as under inflation. We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!

Laughing , it's a shame you read of a few that have suffered problems with theirs but I honestly haven't had a glitch worth mentioning. Even the 'low battery' alarm I had sorted at the last service by LR done it's job the other night. Damn thing was beeping away and woke me up at 4 in the morning, previously i'd left the keys in the ignition/dash lit up from 4 in the afternoon 'til midnight.......only realised what i'd done when I tried to find my keys to lock the front door on my way to bed and thought nothing of it Thumbs Up Was nigh on dead but a set of jump leads sorted it. Just to point out if you're low batt' alarm goes off you can't stop it until you put the key in the ignition! which in my case meant getting out of bed, I guess it's an early warning system of sorts.

Tyres are a funny old things. All car tyres are to some degree are pourus and will lose air presure after a while.
Trouble is if you leave them under inflated you will use more fuel but you will also wear the tyre out on the outer and inner edges. If you over inflate then you wear the middle of the tyre out, either way it will cost you more as your tyres will need replacing much sooner. Fuel consumption greatly depends on how you drive.
Your engine will return the best fuel results if you keep your revs down around 1800 to 2200 rpm and use the gears properly or rev gently in an automatic as it will change gear but will take a little longer. Thumbs Up
