how to drive a Td4

OK, I appreciate this sounds like a stupid question, but what is the best way to drive the Td4?

I have just done the deal on a 6-speed manual 07 FL2 to replace my beloved RX-8 and there is quite a contrast between the low-torque, hi-revving rotary engine and the diesel lump. Whistle Also, I have never owned an oil-burner before... just a succession of petrol engines.

So... where is the best rev range for economy? What about power? I guess leaving this one sitting in the 3,000 - 4,000 band and revving up to 6,500 before changing down isn't ideal, right? Confused

Thanks!

Drive it like you would anything else, if you need to change up or down, it will be obvious by the sound or chugging. Keeps looking at your MPG display to see whats economic and thats it. Sixth gear amd 60mph will get you about 35mpg plus.

Welcome to the world of Freelanders Thumbs Up

Engine won't rev past about 4500rpm so if you're in that range all the time you must be going around robbing banks Laughing .
You should also notice the better fuel economy over the RX-8.

Normal driving in the range of 2000 - 2500rpm should yield the best economy from the diesel lump Thumbs Up ______________________

Just try & get used to the strange turbo lag type scenario you have with the manual. Apparently so I was told by a dealer the ECU restricts fuel flow for a split second when changing up through gears noticably from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd & 3rd to 4th thus giving an unpleasant feeling as though there is a lack of get up & go Censored (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

Now we are getting there... what else? Wondering about the ECU story since my wife's (petrol - see above) does that a little.

Nor me, I've had mine 3 years and as long as you dont drop the revs too low it always pulls cleanly. 2011 SD4 HSE Ipanema Sand

It is very noticeable on mine even more so when you are in a hurry (accelerating quickly). Depending on how you let the clutch out & how you treat the throttle varies the problem. One thing I can say is that it is extreemly irritating. I drive loads of cars now & in the past & never had this problem before.
I would never in my sane mind buy another manual Landrover again. Dealers all say can't find a problem though if you search through this forum there was a thread started by a new member earlier in the year who had this problem! Problem is if the computer they plug it into says all ok then it is regardless. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

Keep the revs above 2000 RPM and you won't notice any turbo lag...
Below there is a little lag, software induced, in order to not prematurely destroy the turbo by surge phenomena.
A nice explanation of turbo surge, here, also on Wikipedia.
