I never understand the obsession of some, not only here on the board but everywhere, with the caravans...
What is bothering? The size? The speed? The owners?
Because a car with a caravan behind is no bigger than a truck or a trailer. And for sure not slower.
So why not bother in the same manner with trucks?

Maybe somebody will explain it to me. Let see now who is feeling "somebody"...

My opinion

trucks are ok as they are blocking the road for a job of work, but vans are just a leisure toy so shouldn't get in the way of peoples transit.

A lot of farmer's make a lot of extra money out of the camper's and caravans every year, we need to drive the dam thing to the farms so that the farmer can make there extra cash ???

Its not the caravans them self s but the car drivers towing them with under powered cars, I keep within the speed limits and catch many slower drivers

One key essential difference in the UK between a caravan and a lorry is that the latter pays to use the road, the former does not.

Whilst one must recognize that the majority of those who currently enjoy towing a caravan on UK public roads do so legally, there are many valid reasons why that practice should either be paid for through vehicle excise duty, or, be banned entirely.

It is a very contentious issue not only in the UK but in many other countries. Each nation has its own way of trying to satisfy the demands of the pro and anti "touring caravan" factions.

Some require obligatory annually certified caravan road worthiness safety tests, in others drivers must pass a "towing" driving test, and some charge road fees to tow a caravan. Some apply yearly caravan vehicle excise duty, and others insist on two or more of these measures. The UK has a lax (and some argue dangerous) caravan towing environment. Hence the "heat" this subject generates.

Their should be a Tax on all trailers not just LGV's then we can get some of these delapidated farmers trailers off the roads

Thanks for the answers! So in the end, isn't better for one passionated caravaner to get a motor caravan than a towed caravan?
In this way it is simpler. The licence and the fees and all related stuff is more clearly defined.... Like for a small bus.

But then each time you want to go anywhere you have to pack up the campervan

Though I do wonder how come a NZ'er started this thread, I would have thought they would complain about sheep in the road than caravans slowing them down

For the record my main farm trailer is 4 years old with excellent hydraulic powered brakes, the second trailer is about 20 years old but has new brake shoes this years so gives excellent braking. Unlike caravans the trailer brakes operate with the brake pedal, not using a spring loaded drawbar ,

The tractors towing them have powerful hydraulic brakes. ( but these still need me to use the pedal so I cant guarantee any braking action in the case of a caravan getting in the way ) At work
