2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

Massive turbo lag... or is it?

On the manual - if you try accelerate briskly through the gears - after each gear change there is a 1 or 2 second pause each time you get back on the accelerator before the car starts to pull. You end up jerking forward in your seat. Absolutely hopeless.

End result is you change gears slowly - and get back on the power gradually to make it smooth. It's like driving the first turbo car of the 80s!! However the auto flies through the gears without the turbo lag being obvious at all.

Is this just my freelander? You may blame my driving but come on - I drive 30k+ / year and have owned a host of diesel and petrol turbo cars and never had anything like this. Is there a special trick or knack I am missing here??

I have found this too, fine if you take your time but very bad if you try to pull away through the gears hard.

yes I find this as well, and there has been another thread/post on this problem.

it is not turbo lag and does only occur as you say flylr when trying to make brisk progress up through the gears, and is not down to your driving.

initially I thought it was either my car or my driving !!

Could it be because when you press the clutch loading on the engine falls to zero and this then forces the turbo to reduce the turbo presure (at the intake), and then you need to build this up again with the next gear.
On Auto this dont happen as even during the gear change engine is fully loaded and also due to overboosting which is only active in the auto. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

Agreed. As I said in an auto vs manual post - the Auto seems far superior to the manual in all aspects except the fuel consumption. I would have paid the extra for the auto but needed a car quickly and only a manual was available.

Pretty poor attempt by LR to be honest.

Might look at a trade-in on my almost brand new manual against an equally new auto.

Just a suggestion. As you have a 2010 model it might be worth having the dealer check the pedal to fuel pump response times before you go to the expence of trading it for an auto. Might only be a software adjustment on the throttle pedal response times.

I have found this & is extreemly annoying & for this I would NEVER buy another manual Landrover as this turbo lag is crap & the dealers are not the least bit intersted in doing anything about it. In fact when ever I told them about the hesitation as at that time I was not aware as to what it was not one person from a dealer or Landrover themselves even mentioned the words Turbo Lag & it was as if they had never heard of it & gave me the impression that I was crazy!! Prior to buying my manual Freel2 in Sept 07 I'd owned a number of diesel powered Audi's and BMW's, and didnt notice any difference in the way the turbo responded. In all of them if you let the engine revs drop then you had to wait until the turbo began to work, which in a low gear can feel a bit like an on-off switch!

One thing I did notice as the engine loosened up was that it became noticeably more flexible. When I first got it 6th gear was pretty much unusable below 70, whereas now it pulls smoothly from much lower speeds. 2011 SD4 HSE Ipanema Sand

I have an 08 plate manual GS - just 20k on the clock.

I can't say I have noticed any turbo lag at at, especially after changing gear. In fact if I time it right its like riding on one long wave of power - poetic I know but thats what it feels like!

What rpm range are the people with problems driving within? There's always a way forward!

Rather than turbo lag, could this not be a combination of the engine electronics and/or the dual mass flywheen 'dampening down' the torque loadings that would result from a quick gear change when acceltating at full rate?

I would agree with you Mr Moo, it may be something to do with what you say.

it's certainly not turbo lag.
