New owner with tyre problem?

Hi all,

I have had my freelander 2 for just over two weeks and all was going well until yesterday I notice a screw in the rear drivers side tyre. I took it down to my local national tyres garage where they whipped off the tyre fixed the puncture and replaced the tyre on the car. When driving home the DSC light kept flashing at higher speeds and on corners. I promtly turned around the went back to garage and asked them to check eveything again, they did and assured me that eveything was fine with the tyre and that it must be my car and to contact Landrover.

The DSC light is nowflashing all the time and the car just doesn't feel right, anyone any ideas? I know where I WONT be going in future for tyre repairs! Evil or Very Mad

The DSC indicator will light when the car detects a wheel losing traction. It then redistributes drive to the wheels to compensate. This should never happen during normal driving in dry conditions so it would indicate that there has been some damage to a sensor perhaps when the wheel was changed. I'm not sure if the sensors are at the wheel hubs or in the differential final drive.
I think it will be necessary to visit the dealer and if they can confirm damage, get a report in writing that you can present to the tyre company should you need to recover any losses.

Are you sure you have not accidently switched off the DSC as I did once having dropped something on the centre console?

I dont think so, the DSC button is now completly unresponsive, the light flashes continuously and will not indicate whether its on or off when you press it.

I have also just noticed that the steering wheel is no longer central and to keep the car straight I have to hold it to the left! I've just spoken to my uncle who used to work for Landrover when they developed the Freelander 2 ans he reckons that they have jacked it up in the wrong place and damaged the somthing under the streering (hence the DSC error).

I am going to give landrover a call today and book it in to be seen, its still got landrover warranty on it but I suspect unless I am inventive with how the fault occurred I will have to pay out for the repair Sad

Thanks for your responses Smile

make sure you keep any receipts from the tyre fitter and also make a note of any conversations you had with them. As already mentioned - get a report and quote from Landrover and see the Manager at the tyre fitters

I am paranoid about tyre fitters and where/how they jack the car. It is not possible to lift both rear tyres off the ground on the Freelander. See the pdf file in my gallery for the jacking positions. I take a copy of this with me when I visit the tyre depot.

That's good advice. Lifting part of a 2.5 tonne car in the wrong place could cause serious damage and a lot of these poorly trained individuals at tyre fitters tend to just look for something chunky underneath - not good.
The PDF does show a front and rear central point (3) which looks like it would lift 2 wheels at either end? Wish I'd seen this before I swapped my summer wheels on recently, could have tried that.

Landrover assistance came to look at it fisrt thing this morning, apparently trackings been knocked out hence steering wheel mis-alignment and DSC fault. Got to take it to a dealer to get it fixed, not covered by warranty so will be definately sending the bill to the tyre fitters!

Thanks for all your replies. Excellent advice, I have learned my lesson now and will be much more careful when choosing where I take my car for repairs!

Was also v.impressed with Landrover assistance service, this being my first landrover I was pleasantly surprised by the level of service they provide and how helpful they have been. Think thats me sticking with Landrovers from now on then Smile
