Front brake pads

Dealer advised during service today after only 21k miles that they require replacement. Shocked Are standard type OK or is there anything better? Thumbs Up

Get a second opinion, read a few time about dealers saying things need replacing and they was still ok and would have passed a MOT Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Get an independent to check them, should they need replacing then as long as you use genuine parts while under warranty you wont have any problems if you have a warranty claim. Remember you can save a lot of money by not letting the stealers have the priveledge.

I would agree to get an independant opinion, and have a look yourself as you may be able to see how much meat is left on them without even taking the wheel off.

at 21K miles you must be hard on the brakes !!

my Disco 11 had done 37K and still had the original pads and tyres, all still with a good few thousand miles left.

As a rule of thumb ?
When the friction material (the part that brakes on the disc) is the same thickness as the metal plate is bonded to, there are at the point when you need to put your hand in your pocket and get them re-placed soon.

There a very good chance there will still past an mot. but on heavy braking they can over heat much faster and course brake fade.
you may need to remove the wheel to have a good look at the brake pads. or Get a second opinion

I don't drive hard (as if i have stolen it). And theres plenty wear left on my pads at close to 30,000 miles.
If you drive hard, around town, tow or do a lot or 4x4 a lot there will wear out a much faster.

When I worked for a main dealer it was one that there pushed for (A/C recharge, brakes fluid, pads/discs etc)
which all needs services but at the right time ?? ( up sale ,up sale) Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
I'm not saying all main dealer's are bad for it. Rolling with laughter

But Get a second opinion.

Hope thats helps Thumbs Up

I hope I'm right in saying that a brake pad check is not something that you or I are supposed to do every week like our oil and water etc. which i'm sure like me, everyone does Whistle so to be fair to the dealer surely they will have to assess the pads to ensure that there is sufficient material left until the next inspection/service Question So, there might be plenty of pad material left now, but is there enough to last another 15k miles/12 months, if the dealer thinks not, then they will raise this as a concern at the service.

mcphersonstrut,
I agree in what you say, Bow down

That's why I say service items should change things at the right time. Find out more about the way the motor driven, mileage etc,
If you have only 6k or 6 month before some thing is worn out, you have a time to sorted now or latter

I worked at two very large work shops over 15 years.
1, where the company paid for the fleet, but could keep an eye on the fleet weekly (where you got the most from every thing) and we never had a problem,

2, A main car dealer who I worked for liked to get the most out of the paying customer and hire fleet centers. we still never had a problem, Apart from loosing good customers. It was a balance they didn't understand, That why I left. Rolling with laughter

The two main dealers I have used over the past 6 years have never ripped me off. Thats why I still use them Thumbs Up

Get a second opinion. if your unsure it could save you a lot of hard earned cash.

You could be right there, I'll have a look next time i'm with ours, there'll be a cable going into the caliper somewhere that'll be quite obvious if it's there. I'll be surprised if there isn't one as other LR products have had them for some years Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

There is a cable running down each strut but that is for the abs sensors, there are no brake wearing sensors on any freelander 2 to date Banging Head
