Post Service Oil

Just had my 2nd year service which included £40 for Oil.

checked the level on the dipstick day after and it looks like the old oil to me.
After an oil change would I expect to see 'fresh' oil on the dip stick? It always has on other cars I have owned.

Service desk at Dealer reckons that "the oil used in diesels is darker and thicker than that used in pertrol cars and he would not expect to be able to detect a difference between old and new oil on the dipstick.... suggested that If I wiped it on a clean cloth then I would be able to see the difference" . Sounds like complete b*llo*cks to me but can anyone tell me how I can check short of draining the sump?

Also what do they mean when they say "we've reset the parameters" which seems to be a standard reponse when mpg is mentioned. Question There's always a way forward!

Depending how many miles you've done the oil will go black almost immediately after changing it in a diesel engine.

When they drain the 'Used' oil, a small quantity will remain in the system which will taint the new oil-even if flushing oil had been used there would still remain some dirty deposits.

the new oil should be very much lighter than the old oil, which if done 10000mls or so would be very black.

mine has done just over 7000mls and the oil is much much darker than it was when new.

even allowing for some old oil left in, the oil on the dipstick should not be black.

Agree with Iain - Oil may be dark but new oil should be lot less darker. Pull the dipstick out and put some drops to a white paper and you should see a differance. Used oil should appar almost as black paint. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

Thanks chaps - guess where I am going tomorrow?

At the same time as 'changing the oil' they also 'changed the pollen filter' - it's still got bits of grass in it from last year!!

What do you think - 2 days old???? Their explanation better be good Twisted Evil

If they ain't done that what else haven't they done? The air filter looks OK but how do you get to the oil filter??

By the way the glove box isn't easy to get out until you unclip the damper from the back left hand corner....... then pull it out from the bottom hangers. There's always a way forward!

Just noticed a date on the end of the filter - 03.07.08 does this mean 7th March or 3rd july 08?
My car was 1/3/08 - do they replace at first service? I'll have to dig out my invoice....

First year service had Odour filer LLR000899 @ £8.57 whats this for ??
Second year had Pollen Filter LLR019589 @ £13.24 presumably the dirty one.......
Not sure if these are same thing?

I notice that other items have jumped up in price
Gasket LLR006295 gone from 71p to £1.28
Same engine oil has gone from £0 to £40!
At least they didn't charge me for the screen wash this time (it wa full anyway) There's always a way forward!

DrownedRat, cost of parts should be standard across all LR dealers. I have just had the second service done and also paid £1.28 for the gasket. They changed, oil, air, fuel and polen filters as per schedule. Oil should be much clearer after its first changed, i checked mine when i got home (10 miles) and it was. I supply my own oil because Stratstone who are my local dealer use Castrol GTX Professional which meets the specification but is not the recommended oil (Castrol Magnatec).

Didn't mean the oil would be black as coal just black compared to one day in a petrol engine or even compared to new oil

Visited Dealers this morning - got them to produce a new pollen filter for checking and guess what - the old one that they were supposed to have replaced - was just that 'an old one'.

They want to do a full examination of the car to see what else has been 'missed' but they still feel that oil has been changed. My position is that if they have not changed one filter then where is the confidence that they have done the rest of the work I paid for. After all the check sheet has been ticked to say the pollen filter had been changed.

Have left the car with them at their request until monday. So I have 10 plate XS auto on the drive at the moment courtesy of the dealer.

They seem to be taking this seriously which is refreshing and I'm not being inconvenienced at the moment. Lets see how it goes with the customer service aspect of my complaint - they have been quite good so far.

Had a chat with another LR driver in the service area - he had a fault with Air suspension on his RR. He was alway from home but said that he couldn't fault his local dealer Kentmere in Kendal. Seems that this is backed up on our forum. There's always a way forward!

CG enterprises now offer cut price servicing, simply post me your service form I will tick all the boxes and return the form. no hassle , no waiting , no courtesy car needed, and just as good as the aforementioned dealer. £50, 10% discount for forum members. Thumbs Up

My mate once paid a local garage many £££'s to fit a new ignition barrel after the key snapped in it, next time he tried to fill with fuel he found the key had actually broken in the fuel cap lock Rolling Eyes . The fault was fully diagnosed by the garages mechanic as he was filling with fuel at their forecourt when the problem occurred, yet he still had to fight hard for a refund.
A week later he got pulled by the feds as the front number plate didn't match the rear Laughing he had bought the car from the same garage 2 years earlier. said Vauxhall garage is now a new property development, surprise surprise. oh and the manager of the garage is now a drummer, he played at the hog roast last week. At work

Took the newbie motor out for a run in the dark just to experience the xenons - they are quite good aren't they?
I'm not that impressed with the auto box though - not as smooth changing as I would have hoped - maybe it needs to slight adjustment? The sat nave in this one is a bit slow and cumbersom - not sure its worth the extra and the heated windsreen distorts the view at night - anyone else find that?.

One thing I am surprised at is that I can get the same mpg out of the auto as I do with my manual. But then my manual is CR*P'.

Dealer should be phoning me tomorrow with news...... There's always a way forward!
