Good news guys the replacement roof bars have been fitted and .......................dum dum DUUUMMM! THEY ARE QUIET Thank the Holy man and his goat, yep! no noise, NIL pwun, absolute zero, deaf ears....nothin' RESULT!! Marshalls Bedford told me just a half hour job to put your spolier on, new tread plates and new roof bars.............one hour later and three coffees too, was told 'are we are struggling with the roof bars, here is a loan car give us a couple or three hours ....but since it was presented with such a beautiful grin from Lucy (the new workshop controller) , how could I say NO So off I went in the RR Vogue loan car watchin Loose Women on the dashboard TV. Just two hours later got a call from Lucy....come and get it!!! and the cars ready too!!! Haha (only kiddin Lucy!! honest!!) So went picked the motor up Jacqiue on the front desk full of smiles (Hello Jacquie!!) Job done...so both me and Marshallls team (Brett, Lucy and Jacquie - my main partners in crime over the past six months) left with hugs and laughter, hoping never to see them until the first service is due, in the nicest possible way of course. I did comment to Lucy that it surprised me that since they needed a workshop controller with 'balls', that they put someone incharge without any ....did I miss understand

Anyway, thanks Marshalls and thanks Land Rover, now 500 miles and no glitches or faults (except roof bars) from the car, so long may it continue

Carlfraz, I take it you have both the roofrails and the crossbars, right? If so, how wide (from front to back) are the crossbars? I'm thinking of buying them to put on the LR roofrails and use them to hold up a Thule 630 Ranger 90 rooftop cargo bag http://youtube.com/watch?v=YY_SWyjozCA. I'm concerned that they may be too wide for the U-shaped attachment pieces that affix the bag to the crossbars. Thanks.

Hi riverr02, sorry I cannot help as yet since I only got the roof bars and the integral wing at the moment, so I will be asking the same questions as you. I was hoping the feet from my Thule pack on the FL1 would fit my new rails on the FL2 but don't think L/R have been that kind to us. I need something to fit the Thule 'Aero' cross bars when I use the roof box. Since we use the bikes quite often I have had the removable towbar fitted and will buy at tow bar mount Thule system for four bikes, that way the wife can use it without lifting the bikes on the roof when I'm at work and she is on school holidays with the kids.

Thanks carlfraz, if I find out how wide the LR crossbars are I'll let you know.

In the meantime, have you checked out Thule T2 bike rack- it attaches to the towbar hitch and is one that I'm considering:

Finally, Thule's site (http://youtube.com/watch?v=w2E-eE8yiGc) says you would need the Thule 775 footpack to hook up to their Aero bars (869). Seems like a very practical alternative, allowing you to have access to the trunk/boot without removing the bikes. Unfortunately, I think it only holds two bikes.

They do a system that holds three bikes witha fourth held via an adaption kit. The three system also includes and auxilary light pack for the tailights and the indicators, my 'stealer' has one in the show room so have seen it 'in the flesh' so to speak, as the u-tube style but for three bikes. Once I have done some research myself I will post my findings,. unless you find something first

My dealer was even more inventive....he just called me to say he removed the fixed crossbar. Well I guess that'll work. oh, i just need to pop in to his shop for a re-fitting whenever i need to carry loads

I really miss not having roof rails on the FL2; my last car had rails as standard and I had a Thule foot pad/cross bar set up that could be fitted or taken off in 3-4 minutes.

Now this is going to sound really sad, but my car gets used as a bit of a workhorse, a typical weekend may involve trips to the tip/recycling plant. The stupid that operate this facility have a height restriction (imposed by a 6 inch deep metal crossbar) of just 5ft 9in - the FL2 just fits under this with less than an inch to spare. Now that makes my weekends complete because I can be a good citizen and dispose of my rubbish in a responsible way ...... But if I fit roof rails I'm knackered ... so I haven't gone that route. Now Thule list a footpack/bar combination which can be fitted without the rails, however I'm lost to understand how it fits, there are no gutters and there don't appear to be any captive nuts anywhere for the footpads to mount on.

Anyways today I was minding my own business driving down the M6 just about to join the M1 when an FL2 comes flying past; well of course I gave it a good dose of looking at ( because we all do .... don't we ). Low and behold it has a Thule system fitted without factory roof rails. I spent the next 10 miles playing cat and mouse with this FL2 just so I could get a good look at the roof bars etc .... (If the owner of a Black 56 reg GS is looking in, then sorry it was me who kept passing you then slowing down !!).

It looked like a very neat installation, the roof bars sit lower than they would if mounted on the factory roof rails; so as long as its a simple routine to fit them and take them off then I think thats the route I will go.

The Thule systems without the LR roof rails seems a very good idea, keep us informed if you locate them, as I can't make my mind up on the LR fit ones
