Sat TV + Caravan

I have bought a sat dish from a disco3 member for my caravan which comes with the satfinder etc

I already have cable and conectors at home, along with a couple of spare sky boxes, a normal one and a SKY+ one.

Ideally i wish to use the sky+ one so i can record things and watch them back once i have eaten got kids in bed etc

So......

Whats the best way of going round it Question

I think a SKY+ card from my box at home won't work in another box, so do i have to subscribe to multiroom to get the second card Question and unplug that box and take it away on holiday with me, or is there another way round it?

Also the freesat for sky cards do they allow SKY+ recordings.

whats the kids TV/cartoons like of freesat for SKY, my freesat HD tv doesn't seem to have as much choice as my SKY subscription (obviously as its paid for)

What do you others SKY Caravaners do? Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

There are several ways to do this, being a site mod, I expect you want to do this legally ??

I'm no expert on this but the digitalspy.co.uk forums may cover this better, as will the caravan forums.

You'll need a dual/quad lnb to suit/fit the dish and two cables to the Sky+ box.

AIUI, you can take your card only and it will work in another receiver - except for some premium movie (and sport?) channels as the cards are 'paired' to the receiver for this content. You could get the card re-paired to the caravan receiver, and back to the home receiver by calling Sky (dunno if Sky throw a strop if you do it too often).

Taking the home receiver means you can watch stuff you recorded at home while away - which might be important for you?. (I take my Freeview PVR with me).

AFAIK Sky+ recording requires a £10/month payment to sky.

Can't help with the kids content on satellite - mine are both grown up now!

i think they white replacement SKY cards are tied to the SKY box 100%, so i can't just take the card with me

Just spoken to FREESAT from SKY and you can get a card for them for £20 which according to them gives me 4X as much channels.

If i want to enable the recording side of FREESAT they offer then i need to pay £10 per month. ( i suppose because i'm not subscribing like normal)

I might as well pay £10 per month for multi room and take my box with me Rolling Eyes

although they say the box should be installed to a phone line, but i have never had them complain my isn't from day one of having SKY at home

I think i home setup and test is called for or I might just buy a new TV with Freesat built in and save all the fuss Twisted Evil Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

You can test the 'white card pairing' issue by replacing your current box with your spare Sky+ one.

Be wary of that 4x channels claim.... it is from $ky Wink
With no card in a Sky box you get a very large number of Free To Air channels.... you can see which by taking the card out and de-powering the box (so it forgets the card) and then re-powering. (Or with any of your spare boxes without a card).

The 'important' channels you get with that card (£20 one off until they replace the cards again) are the ones from FIVE.... i.e. FIVER, FIVE USA etc.,. I believe that all the Channel 4 ones are FTA - but they may not appear in the sky EPG, although they can be manually added for viewing this would make recording them difficult? Only you know which channels are important to you and if it would be worth paying for a second sub with Sky.

You could check if the channels listed on http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/freesat-tv-choice.aspx are listed as FTA on http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html - but I'm not sure where you'll find if they're in the Sky EPG.

You could always get an Eagle box to share your card over the Internet (then use a wireless dongle
to pick it up on your caravan site). Bit of a grey area as it's illegal to card share, but if your sharing it only with yourself.....

Other alternative is as you have said above and just take your box & card with u !!

I have a spare box with the new Freesat card, if I don't put the card in I cannot get ITV 1 but if the card is in its ok. If I put the same card in my HD Box I can get the Freesat channels no problem but again if I remove it I lose ITV 1. They have changed it as you did get ITV 1 but not Channels 4 and 5.
You will not have the facility to record with a Freesat card.
One thing that I don't understand about the Freeview and Freesat is Sky Sports News? If you have Freesat you cannot get Skysports News but if you have Freeview you do get Skysports News cannot understand the logic in that.
Also you will not need a phone line to order any extra channels it can be done without a phone line Razz trust me I've done it, you may pay in the end but it can be done.

Not sure on what aerial you have but the later ones are good we do not have a problem with reception even on sites that have a booster system we still use the aerial which is far better than the mushroom one, with them you could park next to the transmitter and still not get a picture so we have been leaving the dish at home and save it for trips to Europe or sites that we know that reception is bad like the one we went to last year at Buxton, reception is impossible without a dish as its in a quarry. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I Have the triangle shaped aerial (status 530?) I been to too many sites that TV isn't 100% and you can't get freeview with it

so bought the sat dish to improve reception

looking at freesat from sky website there's a fair few progs ied watch, saves buying a new freesat box so think for the easy life I'm going to get the freesat card most likey after trying my working card in the other box Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I am suprised with your views on the Status 530, we have done one season with ours and the locations we used we had been to most before and struggled to get a watchable analogue but the digital picture through the 530 has been first class. Only once we have had to use the site booster and even then sometimes it was not much better but the 530 has been really good and only used the site system once and that was Buxton. We have found the 530 with a good Digital TV so good we now leave the dish at home.
Try checking the connections on the aerial leads as they are well known to be poorly fitted and earthing out. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Ditto on ad's comments re reception with the 530, it's very rare throughout the UK we can't get a good picture - failing that the sites we go on have a TV booster system next to the electric point......make your self a lead up.
And on the aerial connections agreed, better still redo them yourself. Thumbs Up
