What I have never seen in two identical motors is the vast differences in mpg one owner claims against another. It seems it is not unusual to have one person averaging 24mpg and another person claiming 42mpg. Why are we seeing such variations ? ok a few mpg's are down to the way each individual drives but I mean 18mpgs difference ?? So what can we put this down to - is it the way LR sets up each individual vehicle ??
Its definately got my head scratching. 2008 Td4 Freelander2 GS - santorini black.
Hse alloys, privacy tints, LR side steps, LR seat covers, LR boot mat.

Just filled up at tescos and reset the mileage trip and MGP computer thingy.

Have done a trip to/from work (19 miles each, A and B roads, plus country lanes) and also a trip to gatwick airport from cold (A/B roads, with only 3 miles of motorway). Total of 135 miles and average of 40.1 mpg.

Its definately a lot better in the warmer weather, getting 33 - 35 mpg in the winter including the snowy weather.

Have been using 2T oil for a year now, runs very smooth, and when warm all you can hear is the air being sucked into the engine when you squeeze the throttle Very Happy

Done 35000 miles, and it seems like the engine has just about run itself in.

I dont drive fast, but fast enought that my Garmin satnav estimated arrival time is spot on when I set off.

Just to update, had the FL2 nearly 3 weeks now & my average commute takes me 25 miles down motorways, town roads, dual carriageways & most of the time, I do about 2 mile in 1st/2nd gear (damn bridge !) - 50 miles on a return trip.

Averaging between 34-35 mpg, which isnt too bad considering !!

Put £70 in it & done 470 mile, with another 65 in the tank.

My old car used to do about 400-450 miles for £50.

So working out the Maths.......

Old Car = 11.1p-12.5p per mile (average out to 11.8p)

FL2 = 14p per mile (saying I fill up every 500 miles)

So an extra £11 every fortnight for me, or £22 a month - well worth it for the extra comfort & toys Very Happy

I sold my Leon FR TDI to get the FL2.

I had it remapped to 200bhp, 330ft/lb torque, & done a load of modding for the handling, clutch etc, and got an average of 50+mpg out of it - thats not waiting about either (65mpg record on the way home from work one day as the petrol station was being refurbished lol).

Anyway, would any of us have a 4x4 if we really really cared about MPG too much (I say too as I did opt for a 2.2 diesel as opposed to a monster petrol Laughing )?

Intrigued by this post so checked my car subsequent to a round trip of 430 miles to Cornwall and back - mostly dual carriageway and motorway driving in 5th and 6th with about 50 odd miles pottering about, no boy racer stuff and under 80 for most of the time. Nett result 32.34 mpg.

Not unduly worried as I do less than 8,000 miles per year - if I were then would probabbly drive a VW Polo diesel.

It is interesting to see the huge variance especially those claiming 40 odd mpg in normal drive mode - is it the set up? type of oil? or perhaps type of tyre and/or pressure. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Well i have just got back from checking my tyres

last time i checked Used Tesco air pressure machine, set to 35psi, just checked now all tyres are 38psi Rolling Eyes

I suppose some of that could be the difference in air temp, and maybe a little calibration between my hand held digital air temp gauge (costco one i bought a few years back) and the tesco 'breaksdown all the time' 20p airpump

3psi wouldn't give me 40mpg though Evil or Very Mad Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

For a laugh, reset the trip comp whilst going downhill today, registered 108.4mpg for a whole mile! Took a good 5 miles to get back down to around 50 mpg. Now reading 39.2. So, that's one way of kidding yourself that you have an economical motor!

Did a reset today only did town driving around Stockport and got 24MPG in a 7 mile trip, normally its 36 to 40+ mainly motorways. With working shifts the roads are clear when I'm on them. and that's in a manual.

The Auto is very sensitive to driving habits, much more so than the petrol, since it only changes up at 2000 rpm.

It is quite easy to tool along in a 30 limit at 28 to 29 mph at 2000 revs rather than 31 mphat 1500 revs in the next gear up. this example is repeated at all gear change points, so that the key to economy at 60 is to drive just past 60 to get the car to change into 6th then drop back to 58 and it will stay in 6th, if you just gradually speed up to 60 it will stay in 5th, and never change up to 6th with higher rpm and higher fuel consumption.
I have reset the trip on all fill ups recently and have had results over each 400+ mile "tankful" of between 41.4 mpg average, and 32 mpg average depending on driving style. and types of journeys covered.
I never turn off the A/C etc .

2010 GS Auto, 1500 miles. Reset computer today and drove 26 miles on A77 with 60mph average speed cameras, road busy but whole journey at steady 55-60 mph in a long convoy. 37.8mpg
My 08 GS Auto on same type runs never reached 35mpg. So when well loosened up might get a surprise. All FL2's (3) Gone

As far as I'm concerned, the only accurate way to measure mpg is to fill your tank to the 1st automatic stop by the pump, re-set your mileage trip-meter to zero.
When you need to refuel, simply fill the tank as before, check the mileage (reset to zero) and once back home, do a simple calculation: Fuel used divided by distance travelled, will give you an accurate mpg.
Then compare your calculation with the "in-car" calculation.
That may prove interesting.
