Nick, remeber a while ago I believed I had an issue with the car changing gear what seemed to be at the wrong time especially approaching junctions or R'abouts where the car would drop down a gear almost immediately after I took my foot off the gas...hence 20 ish to the gallon (mostly short runs). I had it looked at with Farnells Guiseley who said that they had reset something in the gearbox and I an tell you now I'm getting 26 ish, same journeys, either the car didn't like the cold Laughing or the gearbox tweak did the trick.
We've changed nothing 'style wise' on driving the car the only other thing I've been trying since then as well is Yamaha Fan's diesel additive Thumbs Up

We have noticed a marked drop in economy from the manual, even so I get about 32 to 35 on most tanks the best tankful was around 37 and the worst was 30.7 but that involved 100 miles of towing over the Woodhead and back I never turn the aircon off and I rarely use command shift or Sport mode My usual trip to work is 4 miles and i do that trip 4 times a day.

Not just me then.
Our auto gets around 24-25mpg around town driving, mixed town and motorway 28-29, driving miss daisy (60mph max on motorway & 20% town work) 34mpg. Towing 980kg van at 50mph = 26mpg, same van only faster = 21mpg. These are all on based on full tank to full tank.

That said I enjoy driving, I enjoy driving the FL best of all, so it comes as no surprise that fuel economy is not high on my list - hope SWMBO never reads this Shocked

Our eldest son borrowed her and got 18mpg Sad
Then again I towed the same van with our old Skoda 1.9TDI and got 26mpg, our youngest now has the car and gets 35+ when towing.

Yes we have converted one of our sons to vanning Twisted Evil it's just a shame he doesn't have his own van so we can start a convoy and really slow the North Wales traffic Laughing Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

mcphersonstrut...

Was it only 'changing up' when cold?

Because almost all auto's do this. When they're cold the lock up clutch doesn't engage fully until the trans oil has warmed up to a certain temperature, so when it's clap cold I drive like a granny avoiding going much over 2000 rpm. Saying that even when it's warm i Don't really go over that in normal driving.

On the flip side, if they reset something and it improved then there obviously was something a miss.

Andy 131...18mpg?! That's some effort! Have you got some brakes and tyres left too?! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

If we're stating what all our vehicles do, My Leon FR diesel does 40ish...

My Triumph bike, only 2 years old, does 30! But quite frankly I'm having too much fun to care when it's doing that Very Happy Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Since the weather has warmed up a bit (this itself helps) I've done a couple of 40-50 mile mostly motorway journeys in my auto and got 40mpg. You just have to drive like a granny at 60mph, which actually gets you there with a lot less stress anyway! Driving the same route at 80mph I get 31-32mpg. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE auto Tonga Green/Alpaca

Had to nip down to the NEC today from South Yorks so zeroed the computer and tried to keep it steady, had the lights, aircon and wipers on all the way there and back and there is a really long 50 limit through road works on the M1
Average speed came out at 51.7 mph fuel consumption was 41.9 mpg so not to shabby really for an automatic.
