Dealer fitting charge

Hi,

I'm picking up my new Stornoway Diesel Auto in 10 days and i thought I'd ask the salesman how much to supply and fit the Front Lamp Guards, £217(inc VAT) he came back with!!

I know I can fit them myself and I probably will but £145 for fitting seems a bit steep.

Andrew

There's not much to them, I removed mine from my first Freelander 2 in about 5 minutes. However, the difference with actually fitting them is for each one there are 4 retaining nuts that are rivet-gunned into the bodywork, so you need the tools to do it, and if you get it wrong you're left with a hole in your bodywork in the wrong place.

However, I think somebody on here recently fitted some rear ones and rather than use the rivet-gunned retainers, they just drilled holes and were able to access the backs of the holes to use a normal nut.

My dealer's actually misaligned one of mine when they refitted them to my new FL2, so I'm wondering if they're going to be able to "move" the holes or if they're going to have to order me a new wing.

Pictures of them fitted in my gallery if you're interested:

They look good Smile

I suppose that's one advantage of DIY fitting, you've only got yourself to blame Smile

Jeez! I thought hourly charges were about £80 - is the north/south divide really that much?

Not sure how it takes 1.25 hours though, especially when the sunroof's only meant to be 0.6hrs.

Hi,

I fitted the rear ones as they was no drilling of exposed bit of body work.

Having to drill the wing to fit the front ones looks a bit more scary to do. Then again there is a biggish plastic bracket that the guard fastens to which could hide a multitude of sins Whistle

Regards

Paul;

I think my dealer in Stockport is £90 or £95 per hour .... Shocked Shocked

But then when my car goes in they will arrange (and pay for) a taxi to take me home and bring me back, and the car is always cleaned, in fact the last couple of times its been in they given it a mini valet, not just washed it, I should go more often Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I guess they have to pay for all this somehow, so it must be built into the hourly rate.

Australia

Just digging this up as I've been quoted labour rates of £99 plus VAT. I've read in the Whatcar reliability tests 2007 that LR came last again but labour rates were ok with an average of £56. Now where exactly in the country are the low rates? If its an average then there must be some very cheap rates to offset the extortionate ones I've read here. Phil

NightFox any chance you could take a close up piccie of your roof rails where they join the car at the back.

I have a 5 mm gap on mine which the dealer says "Thats just how it is" but if yours are different I will have some evidence.

I take it yours dont whistle?

Cheers

Hi pjbnet,
There is no gap whatsoever where my roof rails connect to the roof and certainly no whistle or wind noise even with the cross bars attached. Get back to the stealers and demand that they rectify the problem. I'm away at the moment but when I get home next week I'll post some close up pics for you.

There is a close up in my gallery of the rails that I fitted last year. No gap whatsoever and no whistling noise, until I put the tandeem on the car of course but that is due entirely to the bike itself.

Does the tandem whistle all the time? or just when you drive past a pretty girl?
