It is my intention to take a decision in October or November. Either VW Tiguan or FL2, preferably with sunroof and roof rails... Buying a car of Euro 55.000,- (including all taxes here in the Netherlands) this car shouldn't have to many bugs. If this combination is wistling I will definitely not go for the roof rails or skip the sun roof.
The good news: In case some FL2/LR2 are quiet there seems to be a solution for the problem.

Rob VW Tiguan or Freelander 2 that's the question...

That makes me think it is a fitting problem rather than a fundamental design problem. I know in the "early days" a couple of dealers fitted the cross-bars with the spoilers incorrectly, but you'd have hoped that they'd learned about that by now. I wonder if the plastic trims that fit on the front and back bit of the bars where they join the car could cause the whistle if they're not pushed on properly? It's not the most positive of fits.

I'm with you on this NightFox Thumbs Up My dealer took three hours to fit these yet some of the guys on the forum fitted them in an hour Confused Confused (Land Rover suggest .6 of an hour for the workshop), but is it down to fitting.

On my old FL1 with integral roof bars had no noise from them - perfect. No noise from the Thule 'Aero' cross bars, that was until I cut one of the rubber gap fillers a little short, then they whistled like a 'naked' sky diving woman Rolling with laughter , sealed the gap....no more noise. I will have a look tomorrow in daylight to see anything obvious, but I'm puzzled why the sunroof should affect the aerodynamics to the extent that a 'wing' was needed between the rails. The sun roofs do not look that bad a fit even by Land Rover standards Whistle Whistle

All I know is unless the stereo is turned up I can hear the whistling which gets higher pitched obviuosly the faster I go . Over 70mph the noise stops, which s great as the car only whistles during the legal speed limits. Big Cry Big Cry

Another thing I've got to think about now is where to get them fitted. My original dealer (Shukers) did a good job, and though it took them about 3 hours they only charged me the .6 hours that they had quoted me. Trouble is, now they know how long they really take I don't see them quoting me .6 hours again!

So on one hand I need to find a dealer who's never fitted them so doesn't know how long it really takes, but on the other hand a dealer who's never fitted any is more likely to make a pigs ear of them. Rolling Eyes

D'oh!

Well friends, I have good news: Just got back from a 40km ride, in order to test the sunroof version of the roof rails and I can assure you THE SUNROOF VERSION OF THE ROOF RAILS DO NOT WHISTLE! Thumbs Up Very Happy Very Happy (no cross bars fitted yet, however the whistling was apparent without them with the other version too)
As mentioned previously I had the other version fitted in the first place by mistake! The difference between the two seems to be the absence of some small alternating plastic humps at the underside of the rails crossbar (fitted at the back of the rails). The sunroof version does not have them. I tested for whistling from 0 to 160km/h (that is 100mph). I guess if my other suspension problem is solved as well I will be a happy owner at last.

Hey Defkalion, I will swap you my brand new ones for your slightly older ones............or are you going to tell me to take a hike and go and whistle Whistle Whistle ???

Thats interesting yours don't though, bloody annoying for me though!!! Definately can hear them at 30-70mph.

Tilted the sunroof to see if they still whistle but the angle of the roof must displace the airflow as they don't then whistle.......maybe thats the answer...........leave the sunroof tilited.......SORTED!! Thumbs Up Big Cry

Carl do check for those intermittent plastic humps under the roof rails cross bar. If they are present then they have given you a non-sunroof version. I'll try to take a picture of the two versions and post it tomorrow. Hope you solve this soon. Otherwise maybe we should trade out our LR2's for a Disco 3! Laughing This would solve all problems (maybe).

Thanks for the photos Defkalion, place your bets as to which ones I have Question Question Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes ............. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad ................... Big Cry Big Cry ...................... Censored Censored

Yep you guessed Exclamation ...........the non sunroof ones with the humps Banging Head Banging Head ............now I have the hump and a Whistle Big Cry Big Cry so it will be a call to the stealer tomorrow to arrange for 'Sunroof' bars (without the humps!!!), chase up the rear spoiler, get a date for the replacement rear passenger tread plates, so I can finally take full ownership of my new FL2 as a complete car

I just Bow down that these three ribs on the underside of the cross bar are the problem.

Anybody else with the sunroof and roof bars of either style that have or have not got Whistle . You may need to turn your stereo off to hear the Whistle but if you listen to a channel that has alot of talking you will hear the Whistle above the radio.

Not disbelieving you Defkalion, just a genuine curiosity, obviously our older forum members are probably deaf as a post anyway so can't hear police sirens behind them, never mind Whistle ing roof bars

Hi Carl,

These humps are called "spoilers". In combination with the sun roof they may cause turbulance at a faulty location. And spoil your good mood. Please keep us posted on the results after changing from spoiler type roof rails to non-spoiler ones.

Rob VW Tiguan or Freelander 2 that's the question...

Will do, the dealer has ordered the 'spoiler', 'humpy' versions, I just hope the rear tailgate spoiler when that gets fitted does not affect the dynamics of airflow from the back of the roof bars and create a noise, since I know the tailgate spoiler from my old car never made any noise.

Carl, You do realise that there's a different model of roof rails for cars with the tailgate spoiler, don't you? Wink

Carl you need the non-hump version, not the hump one, ok? Question Question Btw both bars have a big hump end-to-end. The non-sunroof has some intermittent ones as well. Idea
