what would you recommend as the best route ( ferry/tunnel, etc ) for us to take...........we've never driven abroad before.

Driving in europe isn't too bad at all, roads are better than over here

instead of driving all the way to Dover to catch a ferry or tunnel, lookout fir a ferry, something like Hull to zeebrugger etc, but to a point that suits your plans, it save me 300 miles each way  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I drive from Bradford to Chatel (other end of Lake Geneva from Geneva) on the French Swiss border 3 or 4 times a year the worst bit is the drive in the UK - we usually drive to Folkstone and do Euro-tunnel - we have to do that as there are 4 of us +the dog ! I have done the Hull/Zee route a few times and it is good - do your sums though 'cos the Hull ferry can be cheaper than the fuel. It leaves about 6 and docks at 7 ish so you travel overnight. Driving thro' France is really easy - Auto routes are well marked and there are plenty of services - in July suggest you picnic at the picnic spots. All ARs are Toll roards - as an indication from Calais to Chatel the cost is around €60. If you go on the Swiss AR's you will need a Vinnette (pass) which you have to display on your windscreen - the Swiss being Swiss charge you for a full year - 40 Sfr I think. The F2 is a great drive drive - I thought the Mk2 F1 was until I got the F2 in December and did the drive

good advice Gumdrop - we have done the Hull/Zee every year for the last 7 years and your right about the ferry price v's fuel, sometimes it's close, but the fact that Leeds to Hull is one and half or two hours max easy driving then that gets our vote every time. I spend most days on the M1/M62/M25/M40 and you can keep the UK motorways

Firstly Iain St-Gervais is nowhere near the Alps and this thread is about getting FL2 Alloys to Switzerland - not - about getting folks to the Bay of Biscay. Having said that here's a few facts to consider:

1: Ferry (NorfolkLine) Rosyth/Zeebrugge then Belgium motorways to Lille (N31+A17 free) then French motorways (Tolls) avoiding Paris via Amiens, Rouen, Le Mans, Angers, to Nantes (A1+A29+A28+A11). Nantes Ring Road South A83 then D753 direction > (Machecoul+Challans) then D948 ChallansSt-Gervais. Distance Zeebrugge-St-Gervais 760kms.

2:Ferry Hull/Zeebrugge and use the same Paris avoidance route above.

3:EuroTunnel Folkestone/Calais then take the west coastal motorway A16/E402 direction (Amiens/Paris) to Abbeville J23. Then A28 to Rouen to Nantes to St.Gervais as in [1] above. Distance Calais-St-Gervais 730kms.

4: Ferry Portsmouth/LeHavre then motorway E5/N131/A13 direction (Paris) to BourgAchard J25. Then onwards A28 to Le Mans to Nantes to St.Gervais as in [1] above. Distance LeHavre St-Gervais 490kms.

5: Ferry Portsmouth/Caen then motorway A84 to Rennes then E3/N137 dual carriageway to Nantes. Nantes to St.Gervais as in [1] above. Distance Caen to St-Gervais 370kms.

6: Ferry Portsmouth/St.Malo then N137 to Rennes and then follow route as per [5] above to Nantes. Nantes to St.Gervais as in [1] above. Distance St.Malo to St-Gervais 250kms.

Note: All distances are approx +/- 5%. Between now and July study the map of France. And ask yourself "if millions of UK motorists motor across the EU each year safely why cann'tI).

You can fit 6 alloys into the boot of a fl2 alltogether (with packaging?!?).

You can get a return for 40 quid. (depending on sailing times).

Eurotunnel is more expensive, but you can pay in tesco vouchers!
