havent had ours long but collected it in preston and drove 200 miles home, did not reset the mpg and it had been used as a service loan car however, by the time i got home it had gone up to 39.5mpg, i was impressed. Our is the manual, non stop/start, and on normal driving its doing 34

I have a commute to clients in Birmingham or Warwick in my manual on on the motorway and regulalry get 40-42 indicated average on a tankful (620-660 range on a refill). I either use Shell V-Power Diesel (fill up away from home) or regular Diesel Extra plus a dose of Millers Diesel Power Plus. INdicated on the trip compute is consistenctly 0.5-1.5 MPG better than tank fill litres divided by miles done.
I cruise at 70 indicated as it seems to be more economical than 60 or 65 (puts the turbo in a sweeter spot! Also seems to be more economical round town in 3rd not 4th - even though the engine pulls OK, using available range as an instant MPG indication, 3rd is better.
I switched from Discovery (2 Tdi then a TD5) to get better economy (was getting 28-29 in that with similar use). When I've checked my fuel log (in the car) I'll post again. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

Ok I have had a stop/start since July and the most that I have had out of it was on a trip, York to Norfolk, and I got 43mpg. Most of this was trunk road driving at 50mph.

Since I got the car then the economy has been improving. Last tank was 36.5mpg and most of this was around town work.

Today on my way to work - York to Leeds - managed 39.6mpg and this included quite bad traffic entering Leeds.

For the type of car and also for the fact that it is getting better (currently at 5200 miles) I am impressed. ---

I am getting around 29.5mpg calculated over the last 3 months. I rarely make long journeys, as the majority is to and from work, only a 10 mile round trip.
I cant say I am pleased with this, compared to the 42+mpg I was getting in the Audi A3, but i suppose I cant complain considering its a 4x4!

I am going to keep my mouth shut lol, in fact no I dont feel too bad now seeing as I am averaging about 23mpg in my i6 Auto. On long trips I get about 28mpg but around town it goes down to about 18mpg which for a 3.2l engine I think is quite good and the performance and sound is rather ermmm nice Shocked

If 40+mpg and 4wd are a must (which voids a Freelander) what about a Subaru Legacy Diesel Estate?

It all depends on what kind of driving you do an how you do it:

Driving like a heavy footed maniac will sky rocket fuel consumption but if you drive short distances, winding roads, have lots of heavy traffic and have to accellarate en brake a lot, that will have a large impact too.

I don't think the start/stop has much influance on most driving. I think it is most effective in cities and such. not during rush hour tough as after a few initial stops it won't stop again not to overload the battery. If you can get into a situation where you drive 5 minutes and stop for 1, it should influence the consuption.

My wife works a 5 minute town drive from home and averages 9.1l/100kms. Every wednesday I go into the office, about 1.5hrs away over highways and main roads with a little heavy traffic and I average about 8.4l/100kms. And when we went on holiday last summer to Italy, about 1300kms away, that drive averaged about 7.9l/100kms.

So I reckon, if you buy a car priced double the average car expect a fuel consumption double the average car too. Contribute it too the fact that it weighs double as much too.

I would say this is the kind of mileage I am getting, but I always have the stop/start switched off !!

Germany 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Alaska White

My (auto) car now has 22K and the figures I give below are noticably better post 15K.

With the full driving miss daisy treatment, including coasting, the most I have ever had out of mine is 43 mpg pottering around b road equivilants. My 120 mile (motorway) drive to work at 75mph on the cruise gives 36 to 39 depending on whether the aircon is on and if I get the odd hold up. I tend to drive it in manual. My wife sticks it in D and drives ( Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad ) and gets 23 to 25 for her 15 minute drive to work. On routine trips into town / day trip out I get about 30mpg. I reckon I could easily up those figures by 10 to 15 % with a normal manual - BUT - I have to be constantly thinking about driving economically. If I just drive normally I would get 32 mpg on the motorway and 26mpg elsewhere. Unless you are driving in town the stop start is of zero benefit, so would suggest that you work on the figures from owners of manual cars.

40 mpg is just too much to ask I'm afraid. Maybe possible with a 2wd only Kuga, XC60 type SUV, but not really feasible with an FL2. If you live where it is flat, otherwise...Sad Sad Freelander 2.2e HSE , Privacy, Fully debadged, 19" Chrome SHadow alloys

I get about 31.5 average out of my auto, but this will go down dramatically with shorter journeys. I don't really care about economy though, otherwise I would have bought a Polo ecomotion or the like! There's always a price to pay for a decent motor and with the flexibility of the FL2, I don't mind paying the extra. I think the stop start is a waste of time. I know it saves on road tax, but Top Gear have been running their FL2 with stop start for a few months and have found it more uneconomic using the eco mode than with it switched off! If I ever went back to a manual (which is doubtful), I'd turn it off permanently, if it were possible Thumbs Up Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

That is what I said to the salesman when he first told me about it as I was allways under the impression that if you keep stopping & starting a car it used more fuel. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

It does. It will also cause a lot of premature wear on the engine in general. I know they quote heavier duty battery, alternator and starter motor, but this will cause failure in the future and I think all stop/start engines will have a far shorter life. Diesels are not meant to be stopped and started continuously. The motor industry has given in to the government's scam to screw the motorist even further. The issue I have with it is we will pick up the pieces, when the engines start failing out of warranty! Well since my last post on the subject, 28/12/09 the stop/start has not worked due to it being too cold. Forecast is for 5C tomorrow so I’ll be looking forward to the stop/start working again. It hasn’t worked since before Christmas and my average mpg has dropped 4mpg Big Cry A Land Rover owner since 1988
