After reading this thread i had a careful look in my side grills using a powerfull pen tourch and it doesnt seem to be leading anywhere. Its just a cosmetic item and inside it is fully covered by a black plastic. on the other hand, at high speeds, there will be a vaccume created in these side holes and therefore would require more power to suck air in. I think "behind the passenger headlamp" is the most viable place.

Has anyone tried asking the dealer where this place is or is it a mysterious place like the G-Spot?  2009 i6 SE

the side airvents are just astetical add ons, once the engine is running, you can feel a slight draft coming from them, as if the engines fans causes it to move a little bit of air out.

The main air intake is behind the left headlamp, I know this as i once had to take it appart to dry it out a little after splashing through some rather large puddles Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

my air intake is behind the drivers headlight (as you british say, we sit at the wrong side to drive... )
one day replaced the H7 that side, and as you know you have to take the headlight out to do that. Fl2 zermattsilver TD4 S man

Hi guys I know its an old thread but wanted to add:-

I have tonight experience a wet foot from a 8" deep ford at 20 miles an hour, presumably it was the steering gator, as I too have waded up to nearly bonnet height.

I also wish to add my air intake is from the near side vent on the wing. The air intake dips down from the air filter to under the headlight, but it then swoops back above the inner plastic arch to the indicator vent. Land Rover are professions, and specifically selected this as it is the low pressure point when wading. Look at Peperpots video's you'll see the water is at its lowest point just behind the front wheels, which is why Land Rover chose this point for the air intake. Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards

They are a LR aesthetic design embellishment feature for retaining the side indicator lamps  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
Stornoway Grey with Ebony Black Pleather, Clear Indicators, Body Side Mouldings etc.

Maybe I am lucky, but I am absolutely certain of it on mine. I happen to have investigated very thouroughly. If you have the time to do so, take of the side vent (seem to remember this is done by first removing the indicator and then simply un-clipping the vent it self) The air intake channel that runs down accross the top of the inner arch is screwed in with one screw, which is now revealed having take the vent out. IF you un do this screw to loosed the air intake channel, and remove the complete air filter box, including the piping down from the box to the back of the headlight, you can wiggle the channel through the side vent hatch. this wiggles the other end of it which is underneath the headlight.

Even if you guys are not lucky enough to have a properly possitioned air intake I'm convinced mine is. Trust me I've had the front of my car apart properly!

easy test, hold a plastic sheet over vent whilst engine is running, if engine labours/stalls its a real vent  At work

But he is still wrong , if anything its only a vent into the engine to allow more air into the compartment

the air filter housing, terminates behind to headlamp, I have had this taken appart and held it in all in my hand after the engine was missing a beat after driving through some large puddles. it does not connect to anything else from this point.

Also the picture doesn't show having the headlamps removed where the inlet is, so is not evidence in this case

Now, my old car been a 56, it could be that LR have modifed the air intakes on later models  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

The photo was ro demonstrate the lenght to which I have taken my car to bits. I didnt take a photo at the time of poking around with the air intake.

When I get chance I will, but don't hold your breath waiting for them! Its dark when I go towork and dark when I go home.
