Has anyone else got problems with their LR (Brink) towball being a bit loose when fitted into the actual towbar. Although it's definately secure when towing the white box, I hear an almost consistant clunk as the ball attachment is trying to be constantly moved around by the caravan tow hitch. I've just tried to move it around by hand without the van and there's a tiny movement in all directions which I guess is the noise. It's three months old fitted by LR as part of the car purchase in July.

I being more helpful than some (He is being treated at Caravans Anonymous) remembered this from the past. Mine is also fitted with a Brink one but no problems yet, I know the fitter that fitted mine and asked him earlier this year as he fits mainly Brink ones and has heard nothing about this problem his company specialise in the Auto Electrics and Towbars.

I think you should ask the dealer that fitted it to check it out. I have not heard of this before and it could be a serious safety issue.

Mine does it from time to time, but mainly when you have driven over uneven ground. I have had it checked out and it's fine, so far there have not been any adverse effects. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Car going in tomorrow as I'm told this is a known problem and there is a fix (CG - this doesn't involve taking it off permenantly and renting a cottage instead). I'll update when I can.

serious point. dont drive around with a banging towbar it WILL get worse and may fail, trust me I operate heavy machinery and see stuff like that fail. it starts with a little banging eventually the metal gets stressed and snaps At work

Just to recap...took the car in to the dealers for the clunking tow bar. The removable ball arm was not a good fit into the housing attached to the car and you could actually move the tow ball about and hear the clunking by hand, I was told it was a known problem and LR have a fix. I now have a new tow ball/arm + new receiver bolted to the tow bar. They have apparently increased the surface area of the two connecting parts and improved the locking coupling - the connection is now absolutely solid. Took the caravan in for a service today and no noise/problems when towing (Apart from the rear sensors not turning off and screaming their heads off...but that's another story). If anyone wants any pictures or the reference number of the ball coupling just ask.

Hi! I started a similar complaint back in April of this year and have not yet had satisfaction from LR. I will now be going to my supplying dealer Hereford Landrover next week to get resolution. Just returned from a few hundred miles towing and the noise is most disconcerting despite assurances that it is "not a safety issue"

stand by your guns, it is a safety issue. And I dont want to be driving with my wife and son near any banging towbars either. At work

As promised in my earlier post i have today been to my local Landrover dealer and after some extensive work by the Service manager there is indeed a fix for the clunking towbar. The new part is now ordered and when it is fitted I will let you know if it is successful. For me the only true test will be to take the van up to Yorkshire and drive slowly around the local roads to make sure there is no clunking sounds from the rear. I wish I knew exactly where a certain chicken farmer lived so that I could concentrate my testing near his premises  Ralph

Good Lord! I didn't realise that it was populated that far north. How do you cope without the little luxuries of life, electricity, food that you don't have to hunt for etc. Still, I know why you holiday alot now!  Ralph

Bit late for a feedback maybe But as you have the same tow bar as I have fitted I thought I would chip in my pennies worth

The LR Brink removable type fitted to my FL2 has no slack at all and there is no movement when hand testing as you describe. Although I do not pull a caravan I have used it to pull a large trailer filled with stuff and this occasion there was no "clunk" noise as you describe it because I checked in particular for this problem that others have also mentioned.

Seems you have a fault that should be repaired/tow bar replaced under guarantee. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
