Towing A Twin Axle Caravan

Does any one tow a swift 645 or similar with the Freelander 2 ?

We usually tow with a defender 110 but thought we might use the Freelander on shorter journeys.

Any experience of this size & weight van much appreciated.

Swift 645 conquerer is 1830 MPTLM 1545 MIRO so should be within the 2000 towing limit but is over 100% of Kerb weight, I wouldn't try it myself, what if the weather turns and it starts blowing up a gale or worse?? not worth the risk of pushing things to the limit IMHO

Thanks, I know Tandemman, that's why I was asking for any feedback. Feedback might be noboby else tows such a heavy van, which probably means I will not risk it either or otherwise several do tow a similar van with no problems.

I've been towing a van since I was in my early 20's and I'm nearing 50 so had lots of experience however, I always appreciate feedback from others.

I did not particulary buy the car to tow the van, but we often use the van at weekends at a site 5 miles from the caravan storage site so will probably use the FL2 for this as its low speed towing on quiet country roads.

All feedback appreciated.

Many Thanks D4 Commercial

My view is that the car has been tested and given a max towing limit and with experiance of towing you'll be fine with the setup Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Tandeman: The FL2 has a kerbweight (mass in service ) of "from 1770kg" according to Land Rover ..... my TD4 GS auto has a mass in service of 1970kg so the beast would be capable of safely towing up to this figure without exceeding 100%. The Caravan Club insist on quoting the 1770 figure in their FL2 reviews which are usually for a HSE model (probably weighs even more then my GS). Laughing

I'm not sure what a manual GS has for MIS but it wont be much less. PJB should check the V5 for MIS for his (her?) vehicle to work out the ratio.

I can't advise on how a TA behaves behind the FL2 as my 1500kg is only single axle. The FL2 hardly knows its there. Thumbs Up

I suggest you weigh your Freelander. Mine weighed 1940kg without the driver. Allowing 75 kg for the driver means you would be towing @ less than 100%

2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Santorini Black

Hi All

After hoping to get a Swift 650 van, now looking at the New Lunar Lexon TL MTPLM 1680kg.

Can anyone remember the kerb Wt of the SE? think its near 2000kg.

If i input 2000kg (includes Wt of towbar & factore fit roofrails) for the Wt of the FL2 SE, and the van into the 'what tow car' web site, It comes out at 86%.

Alona 08 FL2 SE TD4 manual,Santorini Black, Factory fitted Black Tinted Glass, Anti-Tesco Trolly Side Protection, bebe confort axiss carseats & Cargo barrier to stop twin's buggy & junk coming through. NO Sweets Crisps or Drinks inside.

Alona, its the mass in service figure should be found on the V5 registration document for your vehicle, but I expect you are about right as it will be close to 2 tonnes, possibly a little over.

Don't forget that the MTPLM is the MAX permitted weight of the 'van and contents - that includes a 220kg payload in the Lexon's case. You may well not be using that fully - but do weigh and add up everything you take with you (I know I'm 'on the limit' with just the two of us - but my Swift's payload is only 170kg iirc).

I tow a Bailey Senator Carolina with my FL2 TD4 with no problems.

Upto me getting the FL2 in May, I towed it with a 52 plate 90 TD5 CSW
& I can with "hand on hart" say the FL2 is the better tow vehicle !

On the motorway, 70mpg 2000rpm in 6th and getting 28 to 32 mpg.

Hope this helps.

Two Dogs. I presume you mean 70MPH not MPG.
Could I draw your attention to the link which oindicates the speed limit for towing is 60mph? Rolling with laughter http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTrans.../DG_070304 Indus Silver

We changed our caravan for a Geist twin axle one this year which is 8.2m long and has an MTPLM of 1800kg. We have been away thre times in it and the Freelander tows it superbly. My car was off the road for a few weeks and i towed the caravan with a 110 defender and a range Rover sport and the freelander is by far the better towcar of the three. The defender was too noisy to use everyday or for long journeys and the Range Rover always felt a bit vague in terms of steering and was effected far more by crosswinds and lorrie overtaking than the freelander.

I would have no hesitation in using the freelander as a towcar for your caravan.

We are heading off to Uttoxeter on Sunday and i am looking forward to the drive.

Twodogs, I have to agree. I also towed with a TD5 and was a little aprehensive about getting the FL2 after towing with a TD5 I thought it was a step in the wrong direction but they are worlds apart, just cannot believe how well the FL2 pulls, the only thing I really miss is the low range box for reversing with the van on as reverse is a tad high geared but that seems to be the same for all vehicles with six speeds. But what I don't miss is the way when you seemed to get thrown by transit vans on the motorways when they went past but does not have any effect on the Fl2. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
