Modern fuel economy

I love my FL2 to bits but the fuel economy is a bit of a let down.

My other car is a six month old 1.6 diesel ford focus. It is not an eco special, but the standard engine. I drove 200 miles the other day through europe and at 70mph set on the cruise control the trip computer showed 73.4 mpg when I arrived at my hotel!

If you thought that was a representation, Idrove the other daz from Swindon to Walthemstow (including the north circular at 5.30 in the after noon and back (including lots of back roads) and got just under 65mpg.

Who needs a hybdied (other than saving 35 quid for the RFL) Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Freelander 2.2e HSE , Privacy, Fully debadged, 19" Chrome SHadow alloys

Germany

It probably uses a bit more fuel because its driving 4 wheels and not just two. The high CO2 output is more of a concern.
Its a great car, but with the new eco taxes in Germany, I'll probably end up with a Smart or something next time. - Mike

The post was just an observation on how good economy one can achieve with a modern diesel car, without the expense and complexity of hybrids etc. Clearly the FL is never going to match, especially with 4x4, auto and the aerodynamics of a house brick Very Happy Very Happy Freelander 2.2e HSE , Privacy, Fully debadged, 19" Chrome SHadow alloys

I found the FL2 economy to be great especially when you consider all the down points you mention. Having said goodbye to my FL2 with just under 64k miles on the clock I recorded an average fuel consumption of 37.1mpg over that mileage, a simple calcualtion of fuel fuel in tank vs miles driven (nothing to do with the computer); that includes just under 3k miles towing the caravan (which always saw me in the very low 20's!). I would say that is excellent fuel economy and I'm sure there are plenty of folks out there driving motors - none FL2 - that return consumption way short of that, but they don't realise.
