Tailgate unlocking

Hello all.

A fairly common problem - the tailgate won't unlock with either of my fobs (on the second press, as it used to) but will open with the specific tailgate button. The tailgate switch is the main suspect, but this was replaced with a new one only a few months ago, when the problem was the usual dirt inside it. However, just in case, I've had the switch off, checked all looks fine - no dirt, water or condensation, wires are intact.

Before I order another new one, is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thank you.

Norman

Norman,

I have just replaced the tailgate latch which is another common problem.

My symptoms were; not able to unlock the tailgate with either the remote or the central locking buttons on the dash. I initially thought it was the switch as well but after it worked intermittently and could hear it trying to unlock I came to the conclusion it was actually the latch.

It's an easy ish fix but only if you can get the latch off which can be a bit of a nuisance. I got mine released by removing the trim from the boot and removing the connector from the latch then plugging it back in again a few times which worked short term before it stopped working altogether. If this works it's your latch.

This video may help a little: Freelander 2 ( LR2) Tailgate stuck by Germplus

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this, and a very helpful video. The latch itself does operate, with the specific button on the fob, but not with the second press that unlocks the rear and passenger doors. So I'm now wondering if it's an electrical issue, with the 'unlock' signal not reaching the latch mechanism. I'll access the latch and see what I can find.

Thanks again.

Norman

It's the same issue with both fobs, one of which is new. More likely to be in the latch area itself. I'll have a look when the day gets a bit warmer!

My Freel2 is with my daughter at the university but she will be coming home later today.

I think that the following is true and perhaps a better description of what you are experiencing

Let me know if this helps

Restating the problem

- with the vehicle unlocked the micro switch in the handle of the hatch is not working correctly

- pressing the unlock button on the remote bypassing the micro switch will release the hatch

- pressing and holding the lock and unlock button on the dashboard will also release the hatch

If the restated problem is accurate then l would replace the micro switch (a common problem on the FREEL2)

Good luck

Paul
