Freelander 2 EPB bedding cycle

Can't get my FL2 epb into bedding cycle. Took it for MOT and test couldn't be competed because of this.
I have tried disconnecting the battery. put the brakes in and out of service mode but can' activate bedding cycle. Epb seems to be working OK. Main dealer quoting me over £200 to run diagnostics.

I haven't seen Bedding Cycle mentioned before. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

I've never heard of a bedding cycle either or a need to bed in EPB pads - I'd expect them to work out of the box TBH.
As the post Ian highlighted says they can be applied in motion if need be - I guess that may bed them in if really needed. 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

Given that the brake pads fitted to the rear provide both, normal braking and parking brake, you'd imagine that the rigours of normal motoring would bed them in nicely.

I have never heard of EPB bedding mode and have only ever put the thing into service mode for a disc and pads change and a subsequent set of new pads. Out of service mode, operate the brake pedal a few times to take up the slack between discs and pads and never had a problem with the braking system or the EPB.

Parking Brake and Actuation - Parking Brake Shoes Bedding-In
General Procedures
� NOTE: This procedure must be carried out if, new parking brake shoes are fitted, new rear brake discs are fitted or if the vehicle has been mud wading (not water) for more than 50 miles.

1. Carry out the parking brake shoe bedding-in procedure.

2. NOTE: The parking brake shoes 'bedding-in procedure' mode will remain active for the remainder of the ignition cycle, or until the vehicle speed exceeds 31 mph (50 kph). If the procedure needs to be re-entered, the entry actions must be repeated.
To enter the parking brake shoes 'bedding-in procedure' mode.

Start and run the engine.
Apply the brake pedal 3 times within 10 seconds and hold applied after the 3rd application.
Apply the electronic parking brake switch 4 times, followed by 3 release applications within 10 seconds.

3. Once the parking brake shoes 'bedding-in procedure' mode has been entered, the parking brake warning lamp will flash and the parking brake shoes can be bedded-in. Conduct 10 repeated stops from 30 - 35 kph (19 - 22 mph), followed by a 500 metre (547 yard) interval between each stop to allow the parking brake actuator and rear brakes to cool.

The electronic parking brake brake force will be increased up to the dynamic maximum so long as the switch is held in the applied position.

If the switch is released to either the NEUTRAL or OFF positions, the electronic parking brake will be released.

The parking brake actuator and rear brakes MUST be allowed to cool between applications, either by driving at 19 mph (30 kph) for 500 metres (547 yards) or remaining stationary for 1 minute between each application.

Hi Peterash & everyone reading,

I can’t understand why the MOT couldn’t be done……without a ‘bedding-in’ procedure……!
Either the main brake & parking brake reaches the required reading or it doesn’t…..!

I bought one of the last ‘normal handbrake’ FL2 s……having had lots of experience with disc parking brakes on light trucks………..never had a problem with parking brake…..because it’s rarely used, being an auto…….

Ian... interesting thread but I suspect it may be a little at cross purposes discussing as it does the earlier pads and shoes type of brakes which pre-dates the pads only of EPB equipped cars.

The OP has an EPB and is looking for a way of setting the EPB into its 'bedding cycle'

Reggie, Sorry I got carried away with the hunt for the process on a FL2.
I have just noticed the Reg No on the pictured FL2 (58 plate) in that thread.

Reading between the lines, it seems what you are doing for the EPB Bedding In procedure is to stop the main braking system from operating during using EPB switch as emergency brake. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)

My understanding, from the testing station, is that they need to be able to activate the epb bedding cycle to test the epb as an emergency brake.
I have tried the:
start engine
press brake pedal x 3 and hold down
lift epb switch x3
press epb x 4

nothing.

All they have to do is operate the EPB………if it works ..it works….
Suggest you find another MOT Station…

Not sure I'd want to use the EPB as an emergency brake... Locked up back wheels in a relatively heavy car doesn't sound like a terribly good idea in general, never mind in wet or icy conditions or dense people/traffic scenarios...

My 2013 car has passed each of its MoT tests and it has never been put into any user selectable 'EPB bedding in cycle' and nor have any of the MoT testers mention it or asked how to select this 'bedding in cycle'.

So if you use the EPB at speed it signals the car to do a full-on emergency stop usually ABS on all 4 wheels, whilst the switch is held up and the accelerator pedal released.
Ive tried it - it may be "controlled" (ie the back end is NOT sliding about) but its is abrupt. Nothing like the slow braking and locking of rear wheels you get with the old handbrake.

Ive never heard of the need to bed-in the EPB per se.

Surely using a standard bedding-in procedure as for all new pads will do, as the EPB just uses the same pads.
There are lots of sites with various recommendations about bedding-in procedures. All designed to steadily heat up the disks and pads to allow a sufficient and even transfer of friction material from pad to disk, and without allowing the disks and pads to cool down whilst stationary.
Uneven distribution of friction material on the disk is a cause of "disk warping".

This is something Ive done on all my cars when Ive changed disks/pads and Ive never had brake issues.
Ive changed the FL2 EPB disks and pads twice - no issues. Jules
