I've looked through quite a few threads on here and elsewhere and I realise this is a "there is no answer" type of question, however...

I do mainly road work but once or twice a month I shoot and go off rd, I have BF Goodrich Urban terrain not cheap but very quiet on rd and very good in mud and snow when we get it and get good milage out of them, have BFG AT on the Defender again very good off rd never wear out they perish before the tread wears, but its all down to personal choice and preference at the end of the day> 2013 FL2 XS.

In my opinion there's really no need to drop down to 17" wheels. I've been using 235 55 19 winter tyres on standard 19" FL rims without any issues during some pretty extreme winter weather here.

An interesting look at the properties needed in a 4x4 LR Tyre. (From LR Monthly)

I have a set of Yokohama Geolandar G015s (235/65R17) - nice tyre, and reasonably quiet on the road too

Didnt mention how dropping the tyre pressure improves traction in the slippy stuff. Used to do some off-road trialling when we had a Defender, many years ago- always dropped the PSI at the start of the day and pumped it back up for the drive home. Jules |
