Reading the comments about eyesight and glasses strikes a real chord with me too these days...

I take various pairs out with me now and sometimes doubling up for extra magnification...

I replaced the leak off pipe O rings this afternoon and remember I had this very useful bit of kit. There are other types available

Any work needed on my cars is done by myself, i then know it's been done, also properly yes sometimes you need to adapt which is all the more interesting. just change the air duct to the later type see in what i did today on my FL thread Wink

Having an interest in a subject helps a lot. Most people nowadays a car is just a means to an end, an expence that they don’t like. Repairs or anything are not on their radar, as long as it starts in the morning they are happy.

I'm afraid it was short range eyesight (and my ability to get back up from lying down) stopped me.

After getting the AC sorted last weekend (one of those jobs I cant do myself) our FL2 has now passed its MOT with just an advisory on rusting rear brake disks (which I knew about). Happy days. Very Happy

Next job is to change the ATF. - cannt decide to use Gibbons or Drain-n-fill method. Jules

I've used both methods. 1st time full change gibbons method. Now I just drop the 3 odd litres that come out with the drain plug every oil service at 10k mile intervals. That will hopefully keep it relatively fresh. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Modified Gibbons for me so easy, I do it every 24,000 miles. It can be daunting the first time, needs two people, a new O ring to hand in case you loose the old one.

The torque on the torx bolt is only 7ft lb so go easy on it. I use around 12 litres of fluid (4X3litres) with another half litre as back up to check the level.

So how do you do a Gibbons?
Ive seen several threads on it but they seem to lack some essential details.

Exactly which pipe is disconnected and where ? (see pic: brown is the upper pipe at the autobox I believe)



How do you collect the outflow and measure it ?

How do you fill the auto box at the same time with the correct amount? Or do you fill when stopped ?
If so, how much do you allow out before stopping ? Jules

It is the LOWER pipe at the gearbox end Jules.
Make sure you have a new o ring to replace on the fitting. When I did mine it was brittle and wouldn't re seal, fortunately had a suitable one to hand.
I just had an assistant start the engine while I collected the oil in a measuring jug, 1 1/2 litres at a time. Switching off each time at my command. I then poured the exact same amount of new oil in and repeated the process 5 or 6 times.
By the end pretty fresh red oil was coming out.
It's more effective than the dump and fill method and uses less oil.
Recently though I've just been dropping the 3 or so litres that come out of the drain plug and replacing that at every 10000 mile oil change. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

It's the lower pipe on the box I repeat the lower one of the two not the upper one, there is some mis -information out there. It's pipe number 2 on the diagram.

You need two people one to turn the engine on or off according to the flow, the other to direct the engine on or off and to replenish the box.

I don't dump the first 3 litres rather run it out of the pipe, then I replenish with 3 litres four times.

I don't need to tell you to be sure you can undo the filler hole first of all.

The torx bolt on the lower pipe is only 7ftibs on putting it back don't overdo it.

At the end follow the normal check on fluid level
