Brake Disaster. I want to cry

Ok. Some grinding from the rear under braking. Bought new pads, got the wheel off after a horrific battle with rounded nuts.

Pads were absolutely shot and jammed. Got caliper off but was unable to get the EPB module off of the caliper as the screw heads were so rusted they just rounded. Upon finding out the pads I had ordered were in fact too small (thanks Euro Car Parts), I did the service mode procedure for the EPB so I could pop the caliper back on with the old pads, to get the wheel on to push it back to make space in the drive until I got new pads.

The EPB did some whirring and when I looked it had fully extended, torn the boot and had spilled brake fluid everywhere. I cannot get it to go back in nor get the caliper plunger to go in so I’m stuck with a brake I can’t get back on!!

Do I need to get it towed on a low loader and get the whole caliper and EPB replaced???

I could cry. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎

Why didn't you put it in service mode before you started the whole job - takes seconds to do, and no disasters can happen.

I hadn’t considered that mode being put on before I started. I had planned on removing the EPB servo and manually screwing it back as I had read and watched online. As I couldn’t remove the servo due to the bolts I looked up the service mode method but it said nothing about the caliper still being in place before starting. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k

There was no need to remove the motor

You put the EPB into service mode, then push calipers back as normal

Now the piston has fallen out, you'll likely need a new caliper. Which means getting the bolts out that secure the motor
And if the pads were grinding against the disc, you'll likely need new discs too

Yup, that was what I was worried about. What I don’t understand is when I put it into service mode, the piston extended and burst the boot, rather than the internals screwing back to allow the piston to be pushed back.

And yes the disc is as well being done too.

Royally screwed that one up. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k

Unfortunately the free JLR manual only goes to 2012 and doesnt cover the EPB.

Luckily most of the info is available on this forum - like setting the EPB into service mode.

Ive seen good and also some dodgy (IMO) servicing videos on Utube - not everyone thinks of the potential consequences. Jules

And that’s the kicker - I got the info for putting the EPB into service mode
From a post here. Lots of people in the tread had said it worked. I just did the same and it seemed to extend the piston, which was the opposite of what I expected.

Either way, I’ve learned an expensive and frustrating lesson. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k

If it's done before starting work it can't extend the piston. Doing it removed from the car has caused the issue. ☹️ Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Or you may have accidentally done the sequence for turning it back on (out of service mode)?
