When the population of UK was made up of indigenous residents, the desire to
“Buy British” was greater.

When the population was diluted with non indigenous residents,
then the “Buy British” ethos was also diluted.

Only the people of UK can decide whether they prefer a home grown product.
and only the people of UK can do something about it

A good start would be to push Amazon off the white cliffs of Dover

We have had several 'Buy British' campaigns, I remember in particular those in the 1970s and 80s.

On the car front, it was because people were flocking to buy cheap (and reliable) German and Japanese imports.

If I remember correctly the response from our own car makers was to enter into collaboration, or outsource production, with those foreign producers.

As most people go for the cheapest, best, product they can buy (or at least what they are told is), and investors go to where most profit is made, I cannot see any better response to 'Buy British' now.

We can, and do, make some world class products -example Aviation Engines and Airframes- , and excel in Motor Sport Engineering.

So I hope that we pull our collective socks up and start investing in, and producing, the things we need
and NOT have another empty advertising campaign.

PS - I would love another Triumph (Dolomite Sprint) Car - although this time please spend a bit more money in the testing, production, and development.

PPS - I have just looked at the price of replacement EV batteries - At these prices I find it hard that anyone would bother to replace it at the end of it's life. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

You can’t buy British because we’ve let investors from other countries buy our companies. They’ve then done simple cost benefit analysis and worked out that they can manufacture products overseas and import them into the UK for less than the cost of importing the raw materials and manufacturing products in the uk. So what do they do. They decide to make more profit and move production overseas. If final products are produced in the uk they’ll often be composed of parts produced in other countries which are assembled in the uk to gain some kind of market share advantage.

Unless of course the steel is produced in uk by British owned steel co.

Who is more responsible for the present situation Tories or Labour?

How much extra would it cost in real terms if the steel was proper uk steel?

There is no British owned steel company. Tata (who also own JLR) own what used to be British Steel. Even they don’t want to make steel any more. Their Electric Arc furnaces planned for Port Talbot only remelt scrap steel.

What people forget is that a businesses primary aim is to MAKE A PROFIT for their owners. JLR don’t make cars to make us happy, they make cars to make money.

I know the Indians own it
That’s what I was saying
Instead of the government giving Indian billions they could have propped up the original
I would rather pay double for a piece of whatever if it was made of British steel ( as in proper British not Indian British)

The amount of steel that is used by the public is negligible when compared to the steel used in industry and construction and I doubt if they would be willing to pay double the price for steel just because it’s British as they’d have to pass that on to their customers and the customers would be looking for the cheapest price.

If everyone thought (and did) as you have said then all our worries would be over.

But on my last look --- Tax Reductions and Cheap Living seem to get a lot of votes.

As the thread is about EVs, then the example is the only way the Government promotes the change to EVs/PHEVs is to offer tax cuts to Business Users, then I suppose the rest of us are supposed to buy their cast offs. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

As buisness has found cheap sources of labour meaning labour in Uk is cheaper for them. How would people earning less find the money to pay a premium for a Uk product ?

It seems that strange things are happening in Formula E as number of battery cycles are starting to add up, and the charge/discharge stresses are also getting larger.

This article says that they are having to limit the 'Attack Mode' (high power running) quite drastically.

Several teams, it seems, have been forced into 'emergency' battery replacements/repairs.

"The total Attack Mode activation time for this weekend’s Berlin E-Prix double-header has been reduced as a precaution due to growing concerns over the health of Formula E's batteries."

I assume F1 is aiming to go electric eventually?
Where will this leave FE?

I imagine that Formula 1 would less regulated, and leave Formula E with all of its efficiency rules and regulations. Motor racing in general is becoming more and more technical, and the driver/team skills are becoming more and more specialised by race-car category. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
