United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black
Insurance

I had my renewal notice come through from Privilege today, nearly doubling the cost year on year up from £248.98 to £468.09. When I called up the renewals team to question this I was told that the underwriters now consider a Freelander at high risk because of the cost and availability of parts.

Please give your thoughts on this matter, and if anyone else is about to renew are you seeing an increase (I know with inflation etc costs are likely to go up a bit year on year but.....) MY13 HSE Lux Santorini Black Gone
MY11 HSE Santorini Black Gone
MY08 SE Blue, Gone
Alfa Romeo GT Gone

I would have though that if cost and availability of parts are high risk then it would be written off more easily, therefore as the the value of FL2s is dropping they would have less to pay out in a write off???

They can say that about any car over ten yrs old ! I am with them if it goes up this year I will shop around.

I think that you will find that most peoples insurance has risen considerably lately.

As an example, this is a recent discussion on forum -
https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic38192.html FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Thats a load of rubbish .
Most parts for the FL2 can be found easily and are relatively cheap as most come from the Ford/Volvo/PSA group. Paying for genuine JLR parts is daft in most instances when OEM ones are fine. Jules

Yes I think its rubbish also with the exception that body panels, parts, are costly and possibly scarce so would easily be written off in a prang, so no justification to up the premium. 2013 FL2 XS.

I think all car owners are getting stuffed by insurers at the moment - some more so than others. Jules

My renewal went up by a couple of hundred £. Price comparison sites were similar but when I went back to my existing insurer they were able to discount it to within £40 of last years price. I'm with 1st Central. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I guess it’s a number of things, increase in wages, increase in the prices of parts plus availability, and the ambulance chasers with their car hire etc.

Consider yourselves lucky - I had an email from my insurance saying they weren't able to renew my insurance - currently with Hastings.
They said due to the type of car I drive etc, etc, they wouldn't renew this year.
Not a refusal of insurance though.
Crazy situation - 55 yrs old - 9+ years NCB etc.
Cheapest quote according to the price comparison sites, using last years data is around £750 - an increase of around £200 I seem to recall.

All insurance has gone up. So may not be beneficial to move the FL2 on due to increased insurance as what you replace it with will also carry a increased premium.
I try to off set this cost by servicing the car myself and i would possibly use car dismantlers for some parts if required.
My FL2 is kept in very good condition but if it did suffer a scrap/dent here and there then as long as it doesn't impact on safety then so be it id still keep it.
However, trouble is anything from hybrid to EV i personally would not try to maintain as i would not feel confident to tackle it so....sometimes better the devil you know Wink

Ive just done a quote via the cute Eastern European furry animals site and renewal for my current non LR car (2017 Tiguan 2.0TDI DSG)has gone up by around £100....BUT ive noticed that a lot of the policies offered wont provide a hire car if mine is stolen, only if its been in an accident although if its a total loss I done get a hire car then either.

Ive amended the quote to exclude hire car provision but it seems that nearly all fully comp policies include it automatically whether you want it or not and the cost doesnt change

As insurers are writing off cars for the smallest things these days that means im being charged in my premium for a hire car but they will almost never have to provide one..... another insurance scam !!

Mine also went up just over £200 back in December, not as bad as the renewal price of over £350 but still a massive jump, with no change to policy from the previous year.

I've also noticed that windscreen cover is no longer included in a lot of fully comp policies anymore and has to be added as an extra, in my case anyway.

I wonder if there is any relation between companies that offer lower insurance costs to how quick they are to write a motor off, therefore avoiding all the car hire costs and storage fees for the motor at a recovery yard etc.

You'd still get a hire car while they are assessing the damage which can take weeks. My other car (clio) was driven into last year and I had a hire car for nearly 4 weeks while they assessed it. They did write it off but gave me an extra week of the hire car after the decision which I thought was fairly generous (Hastings Direct).
