Have had a look underneath car so that I can fit my towbar and electrics.
The passenger side does NOT have the towing lug attachment fitted which I have .
What size bolts do I need to fit the attachment so that I can then fit my towbar.

Its the anchor point to attach the welded assembly to.
There's one on the left and one on the right

I'm a bit confused still.

Item 1 on page 4 is the actual towbar.

Those instructions are rubbish. Thanks for the heads up. I'm just investigating a towbar for my new car and Trailboss was on the list. I even downloaded the instructions but didn't really read them.

So some clarifying questions.

1. "The passenger side doesn't have the towing lug attachment"
Are you referring to the car is missing something, or the towbar is missing something?
2. "What size bolts do I need"
You have the tow bar but not the bolts to fit it? You need M14 bolts, 110mm long. 4 of them, with nuts, flat washers and spring washers to suit.
3. "It's the anchor point"
Which anchor point?

I'd just say that the towbar is only rated to 2000kg. In Oz our Freelanders are rated to tow 3500kg. Make sure that sticker is very obvious and very stuck. A hell of a lot of caravans these days are way over 2 tonnes dry.

These are the instructions supplied by Pfizer jones for a witter towbar for the Freelander 2. I’d suggest that whatever towbar you’re fitting they’ll be pretty similar though your instructions don’t show the components labelled b and c in the pf jones instructions you’ll need similar.

As the diagram above shows, the towbar attach points on this vehicle are not symmetrical, they are quite different on each side. Obviously you need a towbar designed specifically for this car.

Yes, Bossbob - thats the a very similar Witter towbar to the one that I installed myself - asymmetrical and with a small bracket attached behind the bumper (X X) and accessed by removing the reflector.

In fact I have used the same towbar on all 3 of my FL2 - just removed it - cleaned it up, repainted it and re-installed it on the new car. The OEM towing looms were all different though. Jules

Towing is only 2000kg in Australia. The towbar is up to 350kg with conditions.

350kg on the towbar is a useless figure as there is 120% load on the rear axle, 420kg. The Freelander rear axle capacity is a weak point at 1360kg maximum, roughly 850kg unladen (front 1310kg maximum, about 1150kg unladen).

(Also a Toyota Landcruiser has a useless payload & a pathetic rear axle load, Freelanders are not the only vehicle!)

A driver, effectively the middle of the car, will push the rear load to the limit. Forget the weekend away with mistress unless she is a waif & wearing less than a thong, a lot thinner than Wifey!



(The Freelander is capable of towing more but it will have to be on private land. Someone here had no issues with about 4.5 tonnes.) Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Oops. Thanks Lightwater. The towball weight is limited by regulations to 10% of the towed mass isn't it?

Aussie towing regs probably differ to those in the UK.

But my UK brochure says max towing a capacity is 2000kg, max trailer nose weight is 150kg and max mass of vehicle & trailer combination is 4505kg

But as I said earlier 350kg on the towbar is about 420kg on the rear axle. So you only have about 90kg left on the rear axle. Or 150kg total left for front & rear axles. So two people if lucky, both in the front of the car. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Depending upon what you are towing you can balance things so the nose weight is well within limits. I used to move things around in my caravan until the nose weight was around 80kg. The caravan when loaded weighed about 2600kg, but I was towing with my Disco2 TD5 in those days. Jules
