United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Firenze Red

Our FL2 is costing very little.
Last 12 months I spent £1900 on it - that includes fuel, VED, Insurance, MOT, service (inc EGR & shock absorbers). Doesnt include depreciation.

The ULEZs dont affect me, so it makes no sense to change it at the moment.

But obviously it will have to go one day and hopefully by then there is something available that I would want.

As an aside, where is the best place to get a quote for having a EV charging point installed ?

I've had one quote for around £2500 but was through the Hyundai website. Jules

The Government Grants are there but very limited.

Have you tried asking your Electricity Supplier about Grants and Tariffs.

Also some Manufacturers help out when buying a new (or rarely - warranted approved vehicle)

Luckily I got mine when they provided 100% grants, although I paid a little extra for a 32amp untethered version. It is monitored over the internet, but I have never used it. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Mine was installed by Octopus energy, installer did a really neat job and seemed to give a dam.
Most I looked at came in just under a thousand with installation which is a big outlay!
Most manufacturers can be talked into a free charger if buying a new car from what I’ve been told.

I presume the charger needs wiring to the mains supply and not off the consumer board.

I have an old house with single phase power coming from over head cables to the back of the house with the meter in an external wall box. Its a 25m run from there, along the back of the house and through the garage, to the front of the house and driveway. Jules

I have an updated 100amp Electric Wallbox and a 40amp Breaker was added.
Your Suppler should be able to tell you if you have a sufficient Amperage Feed to House.

The 40amp Breaker feeds a separate Residual Trip and an Emergency Circuit Breaker.
Which feeds my 'Untethered' 32amp Pod Point.

If you can manage with a granny charger, then that's very cheap. We have an E moped, which charges in a few hours, although it's only got a 1.5kWhr battery.
A granny charger will put 35kWhr into an EV battery over a 12 hour charge, which would be enough for most people. Obviously if you have an EV night tariff which gives a few hours of very cheap electricity, then an 11kW supply will make the most of that, but you'd have to weigh up the cost of the installation compared to the savings on the electricity supply.
For us a granny charger would cover most of our uses, and costs nothing as I've got an outside socket right on the wall of the house by the car. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

EV Predicted Insurance Costs

Once more reliable sources are warning about the hidden worries about the price and risk of EV Batteries.

This is quoting Thatcham Research, the Motor Insurers Research Establishment, saying that the cost of EV insurance is rising faster than ICE Cars.

I fear that the 'Real' and 'Future' costs of the EV revolution are not being explained to us, and any necessary legislation changes not being given much thought.

However on the good side I hear that the EU7 rules are being made less severe, and also rules to provide an 'EV Certificate?' are being considered to provide a Battery Check and Record of Condition and Actual Usable Capacity. (although I wont be holding my breath on this latter consumer protection law happening)

Yep, it's perfectly acceptable to charge slowly overnight.
When my brother in law comes to visit in his EV with my sister, he quite often asks to add a few kWhr to his battery from my standard 13A external socket. He even pays me for the power his EV has used, which is about half the public charger rate. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Even though we aren’t buying an EV now , we are having an extension to the house, new garage , and a new drive . We contacted Northern Powergen to see if we had sufficient power for an EV charger to be built into the new garage specification . Surprise , surprise , they told us that we had a standard 60 amp supply , however there was a problem the cable arrives in series after delivering 60 amps to our neighbour . If either ourselves or our neighbour wanted a car charger in the future , they’d decouple the supply and give us a direct line . I pointed out that ripping up a new £10,000 drive to do this would be silly , they agreed , and before our work is completed they will give us 80 Amps , and they do the work FOC . The surveyor said it’s very common for houses to have a coupled incomer , and it’s catching quite a few people out when they go for green initiatives like EV charging and Heat Pumps . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Are you sure that they need to dig up your new drive.
A few years back the gas supply pipe was replaced (age?) under my block pathing.
It was about a 25ft run from the kerb side to my garage (where the gas meter is) and they somehow only disturbed the pavement and about 1ft square next to garage. The rest appeared to be either tunnelled or through existing pipe/duct. I don't know how as I was out when they did it.

I think that they use an intelligent mole as they call it, but you have to sign to say if they hit pipes etc that you’re responsible not them.

The guy who came to survey the job , said that if we finished the drive they would probably have to dig it up in places to get the cable to where it wants to be . To be fair it’s us that are worried not him , He walked all over the place with what I presume was done sort of detector , There is no existing duct , they will install a 38 mm one which will meet a 450 mm deep excavation in the garage where the new supply will emerge . This will feed the meter snd a new consumer unit , that in turn will send a 60 amp supply to the existing house consumer unit . The new unit will also provide the source for the garage power and the provision of a car charger . I know that across the drive we have shared drainage runs , Gas , and the old power supply running at right angles from the neighbouring house . They will be digging the next door neighbours drive to physically isolate the supply and disconnect the couple , then she’ll get a new head with 80 amps as well . No matter how little disruption they make common sense would say do it before the new drive as part of the overall building project . I was totally ignorant about this coupling arrangement, the power company say it’s extremely common , and most folk don’t find out until the EV charger installer tells them ., 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
