Just be careful - in the UK anyway.
The only downside of chip tuning seems to be premature wear on the injectors. Expect around 60k from a set instead of 100k+. They all work by overfueling. Ok on a manual where you can change up early and benefit from the extra torque, but on an auto, expect a drop in economy.

Other than that, lots of folk just pop them in and off they go. Ok, but ins assessors are wise to this and it's one of the first things they check after an accident. If they find it, or evidence of it, (and they will), you're not insured. Not sure on FLs but I was looking at one for the merc (177 inc to 215bhp ) but my current insurer wouldn't entertain it. Another guy was quoted >£100 per year extra on his policy. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. And is there any statement from LR concerning the life span of injectors? That is basic...100K (miles, i presume) is less than average....

I made a chip tuning to my FL2 TD4 and instead of 150 hp now 235 hp and 490 nm There is an opportunity to do even more, but our gearbox according to the documents is up to 500nm and therefore I don't want to load it too much. After tuning, the car just flew. The consumption in normal driving mode has not changed. On the highway, the record is 5.6 liters per 100 km , in urban mode from 9 to 11.

JLR quotes maximum torque figures for manual and auto gearboxes as 380nm and 450nm, respectively. Thats why the SD4 only comes with an auto as it exceeds the limit for manual boxes.
AFAIK the SD4 is really a remapped version of the later model TD4s - the mechanicals being the same







But JLR must have upped the manual gearbox spec as the later TD4 reaches 420nm Jules

I would go with a remap every time
Most plug in boxes just ramp up the rail pressure and modify the signal back to the ecu to say its not as high as it is so no limp mode
Better boxes adjust the pulse width on the injectors too

But a remap can do all that and more and keep safety factors such as torque limits in certain gears to save the gearbox
