DPF oil spec woes

Hi guys,

I have a 2008 LR2 with TD4 2.2 diesel, with DPF.
I have confirmed that the VIN indicates that my car indeed has a DPF installed.
I open the bonnet and the plate does specify oil standard: WSH-M1C321-B.
I read the drivers handbook art no LRL 23 02 56 801 (printed in 2007!), and it does not ever mention DPF. It simply states on p.171 that the diesel engine needs a 5W-30 that meets Land Rover spec. WSS-M2C913-B.
Now, when ordering oil I've typed in the correct engine type. It is 160 bhp if non-DPF, mine is 152 bhp as it has DPF. What does Autodoc etc. suggest? MOBIL Super 3000 5W-30 X1 Formula FE. That has superceeded the previous spec, and meets FORD WSS-M2C913-D. Naturally, I assume that this spec is compliant with WSH-M1C321-B. BUT IS IT?!

I googled equivalent oils to the WSH-M1C321-B but found nothing... which is astounding as this relates to a modern Ford diesel sold a hundred thousand times over. Rolling Eyes

So I browse this forum and to my surprise, the Mobil oil I spent 60 quid on is listed as the correct for oil for the NON-DPF?! WHAT? Rolling with laughter I have put it in and driven 1000+ km.
The previous owner had also bought the wrong oil for the vehicle... And he had entered the vehicle registration into those online parts stores, and sure enough, they gave him Mobil Super™ 3000 X1 FORMULA FE 5W-30. So who knows how long its has run non-DPF engine oil. And yeah, it throws emission related errors.

Needless to say I am not super chuffed, and in fact I need my Freelander tomorrow for a 1000 km trip..

Mobil naming scheme is super confusing by the way:
Mobil Super™ 3000 X1 FORMULA FE 5W-30 is the incorrect oil, but Mobil Super™ 3000 Formula 5W-30 is the correct oil!

It is impossible to source WSS-M2C 934-B oil locally, and I see the spec is often 2X the price of the WSS-M2C 913-B that is specified in my printed in 2007 drivers hand book that was supplied with my 2008 model Laughing I have an O2 sensor fault that seem to come on more often after I put in fresh oil.

Strange that your 2008 is dpf equipped but as its obviously not a UK spec car different countries presumably had different requirements.
All late model dpf equipped freelander 2s specify a low ash oil 5w30 c1.
Such as Millers XF.

Any 5w30 diesel oil listed as low SAPs or low ash will be suitable. Does the VIN decode as having a DPF? If so have you checked it's actually there? Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Ravenol sell a 5w-30 C1 engine oil, not cheap but may be available in your country?

mines a 2009,and on the spec sheet ,when new, dpf was an optional extra at £750,luckily po declined! Very Happy

It turns out I can actually get the correct oil in store, but it will cost 1500 NOK for 6 litres of Castrol Edge C1. I think that it outrageous. I usually pay around 250-400 NOK per 4 litre for my older VAG cars.

I read that for the D4 3.0 SDV6 also should have a 5w30 that meets WSS-M2C934-B (which is ACEA C1). But its manual states one can use ACEA C2 should the special oil not be available!


The engine in the LR2 TD4 is also an PSA engine with a DPF... so I went and bought some 5w30 C2 oil that meets PSA B71-2290, as it was available for a reasonable price. 300 NOK per 4 litre.

(I might order some Ravenol 5w30 WSS-M2C934-B from Germany that will cost me roughly 600 NOK per 5 litre pluss 15 euro shipping or so.) https://www.ravenol-shop.de/motoroel/5w-30/ravenol-flj-5w30-dpf

If the 8th character of the VIN is a C or E then it has a DPF. Jules

Any oil that meets WSS-M2C934-B (C1) will be fine.
Regular servicing is more important than buying expensive oils IMO.

In the UK many quite a few people on here use Smith & Allan lubricants.
