Freelander 2 -persistent fuel pressure problems

Hi all, I’m new to the forum, so, firstly thanks for having me, and secondly please be kind if my post is in the wrong place Smile
I have a problem with a Freelander 2 SD4. It starts sometimes, other times not.
It has error messages coming up in ECM for low fuel rail pressure, P0087-00, P0087-21 & P0087-22
I have replaced the fuel rail, pressure regulator, pressure sensor, fuel filter and HP fuel pump. It is no better.
It will start if I spray a little brake cleaner into the air intake, and will then run on tickover and through the full rev range when stationary, but as soon as you put it into drive, it goes about 3 metres and then the orange lights come on with a restricted performance message, and the engine cuts out. It will not then restart without brake cleaner, but then the behaviour is the same as before.
Anyone got any insights into what the problem could be caused by….?

Thanks Smile

When you changed the hp fuel pump did you check the end of the camshaft properly to make sure it wasn’t damaged where it connects to the fuel pump?

Have you seen this thread about camshaft breakage?

hi, thanks for the link, I have had the fuel pump off again, and the end of the camshaft is perfect.
It's a strange one this, now getting a new error code, P0193-17, fuel rail pressure sensor high input. Data stream shows the sensor voltage at a constant 4.8v
Fuel pump back on, still the same issue - starts on brake cleaner, then runs for 30 seconds or so, and cuts out....

Thanks, I didn't, but have now, and it's undamaged....

Maybe a little bit simple, but you did fill the filter with fuel before fitting?  MY2014 SD4 XS

Thanks, I didn’t…but I have now and no different. I’m getting to the point where it must be fuel or electrics of both…can’t see how it can be mechanical. Fortunately I have something else to drive….!

I'm not sure why, but at times I've had difficulty getting all the air out the fuel system even if I fill the new fuel filter when fitting it. Sucking through from the return pipe side of the filter seems the best way for me. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

There is a special pump to get all the air out, and the only sure way to do it.

I use an oil extractor like this

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cht612-1-5l-oil-extractor/

Which I originally bought to extract the engine oil from my boat. I now use it for many things ( diff oil change, bleeding clutches, brakes etc ) as well as pulling fuel through when changing filters. A good investment at around £20.
Good luck

Hi cgate2

Did you get to the bottom of your fuel pressure problem?

Cheers!

Sadly not yet. I have bought another freelander, and will put them side by side and swap bits
til I find the culprit….!

Well... that was a solution I wasn't expecting! Laughing That said... I'm nearly spending as much on parts myself!

Let me know if you narrow it down or identify... Im chasing a low fuel pressure issue too...

Interesting concept! You might end up with two vehicles that each half-work! Laughing 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Just wondering what are the actual pressure readings at idle, 2.000 revs. 3,000 revs and when put into drive just prior to shut down
