Service history cam belt change

My Freelander has been serviced by a Landrover main dealer since new. The last main dealer service was the 84 month/112,000 mile ( although it was only on 45,000 miles) and according to the Landrover sevice this should have had the cam belt changed.
The service book doesn’t have any notes re the cam belt being changed only that the service was completed.
The mileage is now at 57000 miles and I am now not sure if that has been changed, so I contacted the main dealer to ask if it had been done. The lady at the dealer confirmed that the service had been done but couldn’t confirm if the belt had been changed. She then said, Sometimes if the customer doesn’t want the cam belt to be changed , we still do the other items and complete the service without the cam belt change.
This I thought is not very good as imagine that the car was being sold by a used car dealer, they may believe because its got a full service history, that everything has been done and sell you a car that hasn’t.
Today I decided to check myself to see if it had been changed and replace it if it hadn’t
And now I find it is still on its original belt, so it was never changed but is recorded has having the 112,000 mile service completed.

The reason I use my local garage ,would not trust a main dealer with checking tyre pressure.
It’s only a flash transit anyway, once the word specialist appears you know your🤬

Agree - Full Main Dealer Service History just means someone has paid a lot of money to have a some boxes ticked.
Having had lots of main dealer services during the warranty period of my cars I would not hesitate to give them a wide birth and go to my local garage who tells me exactly what he has and hasnt done and gives me a detailed receipt.

I had several major arguments with my local Ford main dealer when our Fiesta ST3 developed a camcover oil leak (quite a common fault as there is no gasket only a sealant) under warranty at 10k miles.
The dealership flatly refused to tell me what was actually wrong or how they replaced the fault and cited that they are forbidden by Ford to give details of warranty repairs.
It took 3 visits to the dealership to get it finally sorted
1st visit they replaced the sealant but it still leaked.
On the 2nd visit some dipstick decided the oil was coming from the crankshaft oil seal (it wasnt) and took the gearbox off (without informing me) and broke something. I only found this when I demanded to know why I was having to wait 3 weeks for a simple camcover leak repair. They were not going to tell me - hoping Id just accept that these things happen. It took 3 weeks to get the part from Germany). It still leaked oil not surprisingly.
On the 3rd visit they eventually conceded that the leak was still from the camcover after I insisted they got a senior mechanic to look at it. Their "master technician" said the 1st sealant repair was inadequate. Which is what I said on the 2nd visit. I never did find out what they broke.

Since then I had all subsequent services undertaken by local independent using genuine parts. Jules

How did you do the check? Did you open it up or are there some kind of registration marks that should be there? MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Unless your last service at the main dealer was substantially north of £1,000 they didn't change the cam belt. Go to any recommended independent and get it done for circa £500. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

One of the reasons I was suspicious of the belt not being changed that there were no stickers in the engine bay, so I decided to change the belt for my own piece of mind.
When I took the cam belt cover off, you could see the belt was not in poor condition, but hadn't been changed since the vehicle was built

One of the problems isn't it. Bought mine after it may have had the belt done at 7 years but no way of knowing, even with LR service history. But it's getting towards time for a theoretical second belt so I guess I'll find out soonish.

ah, thanks elvis. How often would the stickers be put on I wonder. And how much for just the stickers instead of the belt??

Cheers guys. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

My daughter recently bought a 2013 FL2 with around 90k miles on it from our local main JLR dealer. There was no paperwork to suggest that the cam belt had ever been done so they replaced it for her without any quibble.

It is a bit of a lottery, isn't it?

My daughter has a Seat Ibiza, the book showed it had had a cambelt change. All good then? Except they had cheaped out and not changed the water pump which was now leaking. So I had to do the whole lot again. All because someone wanted to save £30 the first time round.

I should have said that they also did the water pump on my daughter's car.

Sounds like a good dealer there. They do exist but the bad ones get them all a bad reputation... Sad FL2 2007 2.2d Auto SE. Baltic Blue.

I’m sure there are good and bad stories about every dealer but we’ve found Charles Hurst JLR in Belfast (part of the Lookers group) to be very good to do business with over the last eighteen months.

Bought mine there. Went back for a leaking centre brake light under warranty. They bodged it with silicon sealant. It won't see their door again. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
