Gearbox or Haldex?

Good morning, I own a Freelander 2 TD4 XS 2010 Auto with 131000 miles on the clock, last year I was having problems with what I thought was my gearbox, instead of Changing gears at say 1500rpm it was around 2000rpm, and the MPG dropped from around 31 to 27-28 I took it to a garage and they advised that it was the gearbox on the way out, they did an oil change and added some DrTranny, I have not noticed and shudder before this point, now I know this doesn’t last forever, but now I’m having a slight judder sometimes when I come off a round abouts like the front wheels are juddering, somebody mentioned the Haldex unit, I know for a Fact that this has never been looked at or oil changed, could this be the problem and not the gearbox as I have had no error codes appear at all, the cost of more DrTranny treatment and gearbox oil change is around £280 , the cost of the Haldex oil and filter change is £310, really not sure which one to do as cash is tight or if I should just sadly scarp it as a gearbox is around £2500_£3000 , would rather not scrap it as apart from those problems I love during it.
If I had a diagnostic carried out would this bring up any codes even if they don’t show on the dash?
Really not sure what to do so any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks in advance
Steve

It's worth way more than scrap value, even with a slightly misbehaving drive line component. Someone will pay good money for a good connection Freelander 2 if sold on the private market.

It seem it hasn't been maintained correctly, even by LRs pathetic time frame. The Haldex should have a fluid and filter change at 10 years according to LR, which is 6 years too long by any other vehicle manufacturer using the same Haldex. The Haldex also doesn't cost anything like £310 to service, if you do it yourself, with £50 for the parts needed.

Dr Tranny is also a product which is designed to be put in a transmission that is suffering from a particular shudder issue, just to help it live a bit longer until a rebuild or replacement can be found. It most definitely should not be put in a transmission that doesn't shudder, as it works as a friction modifier, helping a shuddering clutch plate engaged smother. However if its put in a transmission which doesn't have shudder issues, then it can be assumed that the clutches are in good condition, in which case a friction modifier will potentially cause them to slip, burning the clutch pack and shorten the transmission life.. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. If you're able to diy both these jobs including the filter and both oils are less than £100. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

That would be ideal, ive done it using a set of drive up ramps. I'm getting too old for crawling about on the floor under cars but my aversion to paying garages to do something I can manage myself makes me determined 😁. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

If you remove the fuse to the haldex ("on-demand coupling") the haldex wont work (ignore the fault alerts - they will correct after the fuse is replaced). If the problem goes away then the fault is likely to be the haldex.

The 3rd generation haldex is easier to work on than the 4th generation as the haldex oil filter is in a different position.

Lots of information on here about haldex and autobox oil changes. Jules

Is there not a specialist freelander garage your way (run by someone called Sue) who may offer a cheaper but proper job than others.
Someone on here may give you correct name/location of this garage.
Good luck...it would be such a shame to scrap if ok otherwise.

The website freelanderspecialst.com is where I had the £305 quote from, looks like I will have to save some pennies and get it done, thanks for all your input

Just a thought, front wheels juddering, could the front 90 degree box (IRD / PTO ?) have gone west?
These have been known to strip splines leaving you with front wheel drive only. On a car that is designed to set off in 4x4 it will spin the front wheels with little provocation, especially if turning while setting off.

It does not throw up any error codes as it simply doesn't transmit drive to the Haldex. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
