FL2 low pressure fuel pump

Hi everyone, does anyone know if it is possible to remove the low pressure pump with the tank in place ? . I have an intermittent fault with the fuel gauge. One minute it’s half full ( which is about right ) then it’s showing reserves going into limp mode !! . Suspect it’s the fuel pump assembly and was thinking of changing the lot. Don’t fancy dropping the tank though . Appreciate any advice please .

Freebie JLR manual : From page 1579 onwards

"The TD4 diesel fuel system incorporates a low and high-pressure (HP) circuit to provide the engine with sufficient fuel for
all operating conditions. The low-pressure (LP) system comprises:
Molded plastic saddle-type fuel tank
Fuel delivery module (with integral in-tank pump)
Fuel level sensors
Fuel supply and return lines
Fuel filter assembly.
• NOTE: Fuel is drawn from the fuel tank by the engine mounted lift pump. The in-tank pump does not deliver fuel to the
engine, and only delivers fuel through the 2 jet pumps to maintain fuel in the fuel delivery pot."


From looking in the JLR manual it looks like you need to remove the tank to get the fuel pump/sender unit out. Big Cry

Also special tool needed for the pump unit locking ring. Jules

Haynes manual also says to remove the tank to remove the fuel pump unit and for once has some good pics - eg using a punch and hammer to undo the locking ring (with the fuel tank off I might add).

You can see the top of the unit through the under seat grommet and get to the wiring but maybe you cant get the unit out of the tank that way.

So if anyone has got the pump unit out of the tank without removing the tank - let us know please. Jules

Surely the pump in the tank just transfers fuel from one side to the other, and the low pressure system drawing fuel from the tank is done by the engine driven pump under the bonnet.

Unless I have missed something, the OP's symptoms are as my link above. Tank sender wiring at tank end. All other symptoms are caused by the car protecting itself against running out of fuel.

Fuel Gauge wiring is a known problem. It needs attention at fuel tank end and there is a Technical Bulletin and fix for it.

Sorry, IanMetro is correct. The pump in the tank only moves fuel from one side of the tank to the other, feeding a swirl pot that keeps the tank end of the fuel line supplied. Fuel is sucked up the fuel line and through the filter to the high pressure pump by the low pressure side of this pump, hence the reason for ensuring that the filter and fuel line are bled correctly when the filter is changed.

IanMetro is correct-common fault on early FL2’s. The specialist I used dropped the tank to carry out the repair.

Long story, short.
If I see things right, I should be able to remove the fuel pump without dropping the tank ??

When looking at the pics and reading the LR instructions they're not indicating tank removal.

Seems there is a small fuel filter in that pump. I want to change that filter.
Would be kind of dumb design right, to drop a fuel tank for the need to change a filter....
