The Td4 will easily pull one tonne. My loaded car trailer is about 1350 kg and you wouldn’t know it was there behind my 2008 Td4

TD4 would be more than capable for the intended use but SD4 with its autobox and 190hp makes towing effortless.

TD4 will be cheaper on fuel/tax/insurance, 150 BHP is more than adequate. 2013 FL2 XS.

My advice is always - Buy the Latest, most Equipped, SD4 Auto Freelander that you can afford.

Another aspect from someone who upgraded from td4 to sd4, is that both are great at towing. But the sd4 can be a bit too lively and in heavy traffic makes for a jerky ride at low speeds. I change to manual and keep it in 2nd. So another consideration is the extra goodies that come with sd4. For me that primary need was for a memory seat in full leather to suit both my wife and me. |

I have never experienced this and find my Sd4 to be smooth and responsive no matter what the traffic conditions are. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Make sure it has a full size alloy spare wheel. You lot are notorious for supplying cars with a fart can! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I agree that the SD4 auto is very smooth and relaxing to drive. The torque convertor gearbox moves away in a controlled way, and part throttle gearchanges up/down are barely noticeable. The SD4 engine has enough torque and power that it appears to ignore any extra load you carry in the car. The FL2 is extremely impressive when you pull out of a loose surfaced lane and need to pick up speed to merge with traffic because it always starts in full 4-wheel drive. Also, I believe, the SD4 Auto is best at providing that mini-Range Rover experience if you get a later high spec car. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011) FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015) Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History (Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?) |

Tip , at 9 years old the FL2 can be low mileage and look stunning in any configuration. But you have to consider condition beyond the engine . Both TD and SD will pull a 1 tonne load like it isn’t there . If you can get the car up on a lift , look at the underside . The exhausts are never an issue , I think they are stainless , but everything else is a target for corrosion . If the car has been used on a farm or shooting , or in winter , mud , salt etc is going to be a problem . Cars from high salting areas like the Pennines can deteriorate faster . Inside the wheel arches behind the lip you might have 9 years of accumulated crud , shockers rusted are a nightmare yo change , look in the spare wheel well , make sure it’s dry , if the drain grommet is missing it can rot the floor out quickly . Look at past MoT advisories for any mention of corrosion . I’m not scaremongering just being practical . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

With regards to pricing and offers, the high demand in used car market at the minute is making everything artificially high. Late high spec low mileage Freelanders are still in demand. I'd not hold out much hope for a bargain price. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Agree. I have the petrol engine which is only 340Nm. Have had over 700kg inside the car with roof tiles 4 times. From a torque point of view you would barely know the additional mass was there. I did notice some slight tyre instability issues but that was with the stock Continentals. The AT tyres I have now would have no issues. In the outback we are at the 500kg payload limit. There is simply no hint of an issue of the additional mass. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
